Has anyone here had food poisoning before?

Post by CAMary »

The following contains TMI - but you folks are the only ones I can ask...

I mentioned in my "springtime" post that Mike and I believe that's what we had over the weekend since we were both hit within an hour of each other....He is totally fine now. I'm not sure yet if I am...

So I was initially hit early Sunday...leter that afternoon/eve (okay gonna get graphic - put down your lunch, LOL!) I had a couple of episodes where I had to run to the pot, but literally all that came out was clear water/mucus...Monday I felt fine - didn't need to go at all...I had some things I needed to take care of afternoon/eve, so I took a single Immodium as insurance (I was not going to be near a bathroom!). I also ate safe/bland Sunday night and Monday. My appetite is okay, but I have been eating smaller portions - trying to play it safe. Tues. was VERY busy w/work - didn't get dinner until 9pm (and was starving!). Tues eve - I thought I had to go - ended up just having gas and again a bit of mucus (this time it was brown). So I haven't had any action to speak of since Sunday. With hindsight, the Immodium was probably a mistake, as the idea is to *purge* the bad stuff from your system. I still don't need to poop (I'm assuming this is due to the Immodium and lower than normal food intake), and my appetite is good.

The mucus really freaked me out b/c that is what happened when I had c-diff - but I have no stomach pains, and I did with that...

Does FP just run its course? I guess I need to wait for the next poop and evaluate? I *really* don't want to have to take samples to the lab or something....Haven't we *all* suffered enough poop humiliation?

I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts!

Mary,

Hahahahahahaha. Talk about a profound statement. LOL. You're so correct, of course. Indeed we have.

I've only had maybe one or two minor brushes with salmonella, (I'm guessing), over the years, but my opinion is that with any kind of food poisoning, you will be having fairly close-spaced, (hours apart, or less--not days apart), discharges from one or both ends, until it is out of your sysem. If botulism is the problem, diarrhea will be accompanied with blood, and medical intervention is usually required. Not all food poisoning involves diarrhea, but the cases that don't, involve nausea and vomiting.

If Mike hadn't had a collateral reaction, I would guess that maybe you were having an intolerance reaction to something you ate, (MC and mucus discharges sort of go together), but his reaction certainly raises suspicion of food poisoning.

The question is, I suppose, is it possible for a case of food poisoning to be so light, that the immune system can supress it without the normal purging response. I dunno. Maybe Polly has some experience with this possibility.

I believe most food poisoning cases involve cramps, fever and chills. Did you have fever?

Mary------my brother had FP----he bought a hot-dog from one of the side street vendors---

Dont remember *D* but know he suffered with SEVERE stomach pain---vomiting---and was sick for a few dayz---

Being he was a diabetic I know he had to go to the DR. and if they gave him anything I dont remember that either---

But I do recall HOW miserable he was--

Hope all is over and *OUT*

Hmmm...within an hour of eachother sounds like your diagnosis is reasonable. That happened to Geoff and I last year. Of course it was about 3 days after Erin had had a stomach bug so we really weren't sure if it was the steak and cheese subs we ate, or the bug. But reaction times are different in different people. We both were up most of the night not able to keep anything down and both had D. But then I got better (asides from being weak) and about a week later he had to take another day off of work because the D got so bad. Mine had cleared up in a day or two. You might not have gotten as strong a reaction, and/or your very healthy diet (i.e. gf) made your gut stronger against it.

If you are eating okay and don't have lots of stomach pain, I'd say just keep an eye on things and let it run its course. Maybe add a bit of yogurt to your diet (you can eat some dairy right?).

Hope you all feel better. Being sick is the pits.

Hi there,
All I have to add is that after I've had D, and been cleaned out pretty good, and then take something to make sure it stops (like Caltrate, which for me, is probably like Immodium) I'll go 2-3, even 4 days without pooping, and during that time it's not unusual to pass a little mucus instead. I think it's the the bum's equivalent of having a runny nose that is trying to flush out pollens.

"haven't we all suffered enough poop problems" cracks me up. "Boy Howdy!" and "amen" to that . . .

Love, Marsha
