Only in Texas

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Channel 7 news, in Austin, TX, reported that a woman shopping for potted plants at a local Home Depot store, was bitten on her thumb by a small rattlesnake, that was coiled up in one of the pots.

According to the news report, she spent three days in intensive care, so she must have had a pretty bad reaction to to the bite, considering that it was just a small snake.

One of the many reasons I live "up north"! Actually, we have timber rattlers here, but they are a very rare sighting.

Be careful you guys.

If I spot one of those here, I'll probably have "the big one." and therefore, not even notice any bite pain. We have diamond backs here, but think they prefer marshy areas like down around Galveston, and the rest of the coast where they can hide in the marsh grasses. They are in other places too, but we don't leave them too many places to hide in the yard. Truth is, I don't know how plentiful they are around here, because I've never seen one out in the open.

Don't think the rattlers up in Austin and the Hill Country are diamond backs, but can't, at the moment remember which kind of rattlers they are. Please, Wayne or Oma, refresh my memory.

Yours, Luce

The most common rattlesnake in Texas, (and in the country surrounding Austin), is the western diamondback, though there are a few blacktail rattlesnakes in Travis and Burnet counties, (but not north and east of there).

Oh my - I HATE snakes - way creepy....

Have any of you seen "Venom ER" on Animal Planet? The doctor is considered one of the foremost snake experts in the world - he seems very cool - but what a stressful job!! I guess it is critical to know what type of rattler it is to get the right anti-venom started....I cringe when I see some of the patients that come in - little kids etc...It creeps me out, yet the show sucks me in - fascinating stuff!

We have the relatively harmless Massausaga (sp?) rattlesnakes here. The only poisonous snake in MI. I know someone who was bitten by one. Being a naturalist and particularly interested in snakes, after being bitten, he caught it, turned it over to sex it and then let it go. He stayed home and tried to rest quietly but his arm swelled up so bad that the skin split and he finally had to go to the hospital. The regional zoo had some anti-venon so he got shot up with that and it eventually got better. Me, I just go the other way any time I see any snakes.

That's the thing if you can back off and leave them alone great....My husband Shoots them. Unless I see there are an over abundance around here I am just careful and leave them alone. For the most part we have so many here in my part of the country that you can shoot as many as possibvle and still have pleanty for the yearly rattlesnake roundup. Love Oma
