Tex, I am curious...
Tex,
This looks like it might be an interesting article, but I'm not a subscriber. It's hard to know the punch line without being able to read it!
Have you seen any articles linking MC with helicobacter pylori? Celia
American Journal of Gastroenterology

Hi Celia,
Yes, there are articles linking MC with virtually every form of enteritis, parasites, meds, sessation of smoking, stress, etc.--you name it, and someone has documented a suspected link to MC, or so it seems.
Here is a link to a site that shows part of the article that you cited, in which H. pylori was involved, (scroll down to the second page):

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thanks! I find this interesting. No doubt there are multiple contributing factors to a disease like MC, and it will be years before we know them all. Or conversely, one's system is weakend due to MC and therefore more vulnverable to infections. Who knows!
I have a particular interest in h. pylori at the moment, so this struck my curiosity.
Thank you so much for being such a generous disperser of information.
All the best, Celia

H. Pylori is an interesting pathogen. It's pretty amazing that it was able to escape inditement for so many years.
My own feeling is that MC can only be triggered if one has the proper gene, or genes, leaky gut syndrome, and some other issue that causes prolonged enteritis of a degree sufficient to result in a chronic imbalance in the flora and fauna in the gut. IOW, several things have to occur simultaneously, otherwise it would be a much more common disease than it is.
You're very welcome,
Wayne

Hi Celia,
Just saw your note as only had time to open the top posts tonight.
You're probably already aware of this, but someone has said that Dr. Fine suspects a pathogen involvement with M.C., unless I'm mistaken. Hmm, wonder if he suspects any one in particular?
Even if they find one, I wonder how responsive it would be to treatment, and if it would come back to visit often, even after remission.
Meds might take care of the M.C., but perhaps not the other gluten sensitivity issues throughout the body, but then, that's sort of a chicken and egg sort of thing, that I just keep getting confused about.
Yours, Luce

grannyh,
Gosh, it's horrible how one thing seems to lead to another. I'm so sorry you got the colitis.
Apparently h. pylori can suppress the immune system by altering one of its chief guardian cells, the monocyte. Perhaps that might pave the way for colitis to occur, if other factors are present as Tex points out.
I've only heard of h.pylori living in the stomach and how it can cause ulcers and stomach cancer. I didn't realize you could assess it through a colonoscopy....but I don't know too much about it.
Be well, Celia
