**Update On Salads**

Post by annie oakley »

Well, So Far this is the middle of the 4th week with out Asacol....all I am taking is my heart medication, glucosomine, flax seed oil, Magnsesium, Vitamin C and The Feldene (arthritis med) Salads have not bothered me thus far, altho I am not eating them every day. But instead of Candy or chips when I want a treat...I am trying to eat yogurt or fruit.
We had Omlets for supper, we shall see if they bother me in about another 2 hours. :barbell: maybe, just maybe my gut has healed enough that I may not need the meds but still have to watch what I eat. I beleive that it will be a life long change in the way I will eat from now on. I would rather watch what I eat than to have to be in the :toilet4: ALL THE TIME!
Well thought I would share. Love Oma

Oma,

I stopped taking Asacol summer of 2003. As long as I don't eat gluten, I'm ok. Apparently I don't have other intolerance. About six months after I started the asacol I noticed my hair was thinning. I have very thick hair. My GI offered little or no help, so I emailed Dr Fine. Based on the information I gave him about my situation/history, he provided basic info regarding asacol. I do not think I have the email but he recommended I stop taking the asacol.

Of course I didn't tell my GI I had emailed Dr Fine, but I suggested I "try" cutting my dose in half. After a month, I felt better including less D and the hair thinning slowed. I have not taken it since. When I saw my GI regarding problems with my gallbladder in 2004, he asked how my LC symptoms were. I told him as long as I avoided gluten, I was fine.

Thought I would share. Take care.

Brenda,

That's good information.

Thanks for sharing that.

Brenda-

I experienced the same exact thing w/Asacol! Apparently hair loss is a pretty common side effect. I saw a dermatologist (for a mole check) and he was aware of it - said the only way to stop it was to stop the Asacol. I felt really "trapped" since the Asacol worked really well for me. I found a shampoo for thinning hair that *really* helped! 8 mos later I was able to ditch the Asacol (and the shampoo, LOL!)

I am also *only* gluten intolerant. Well technically I need to avoid yeast - but can have it in small amounts, and not sure about lactose - I'm enjoying lattes and ice cram just fine these days :???: I think I have mild intermittent issues w/lactose after stomach bugs etc...

Hmmmm........how long did it take for ya'll to notice the hair loss??

Peg, did you experience any hair loss when you were on Asacol??

I have a nice thick head of hair but I don't want to lose any of it....selfish of me, huh.
