Asacol and sulfites
You all remember the conversation about why some people can't tolerate Asacol very well. Well, Obsessive Compulsive that I am, I'm looking up sources of sulphur/sulfites, since I'm obviously sensitive, and look what I found! Just scroll down to the part about Asacol:

Hi Marsha. I was one of those who had a very bad reaction to Asacol. I wish I'd had your "link" back then as it would have saved me a lot of grief. As it was, I kept taking Pepto Bismol to try to lessen the nasty effects of Asacol. No wonder it got worse instead of better!
I don't know if I have a reaction to sulfites. I used to take Bufferin for years with no adverse reaction. But maybe that's different than what you're referring to.
Keep up the good work, Sherlock!!!
Love, Carrie

I ended up in the ER with anaphalexic shock about three or four months ago from taking a Celebrex, Asacol has not given me any ill effects. I was off the asacol for awhile and all my aches and pains were about the same. SO maybe I'm wierd and an exception. Love Oma
May I be more compassionate and loving than yeterday*and be able to spot the idiots in advance

Marsha,
Great link. I read it.
Asacol was the first med I took after my DX with CC. It made me VERY sick (I was already in bad shape) and I experienced most of the bad side effects- as well as fever that the link mentions. It compounded my symptoms and I stayed in bed for about 4 days- almost went to the ER. I stopped using it within 6 days.
Slufasalazine (sp?) was the second med I took and it made me just as sick as the asacol. Back in bed, sleeping with alot of toilet and vomiting. Stopped it shortly.
I did not know it then, but do now that Sulfites, and sulfite preservatives are a problem for me and maybe for many of us that cannot get control with these meds and I guess the degree of our bad reactions to them give us a pretty clear indication of how our systems cannot tolerate them.
What's interesting, is that they work for some folks here. Thanks for your research and sharing it.
Love,
Joanna

Hi Oma,
Is that right? You're sensitive to sulfites? I've been trying to keep count: KathyP and you, and me, and maybe Margie? One thing that's really hard to track down is how much sulfite is in a serving size of something. Some of the things on the sulfite lists are very high, and others relatively low, and you're just on your own to figure out how to adjust for serving size! And then some people are very sensitive, and others are ok as long as they get under 700 units (I think it's measured in ug) a day. Weird.
Anyway, talk to you later!

Count me IN - allergic to sulfites. Didn't realize they were in other things - like FOOD! For some reason, I knew to stay away from sulfa drugs but never gave it much thought beyond that.
The article was very interesting! Thanks for being a great researcher Marsha!

Hi Margie,
I just talked to my mom, and she's allergic to sulfa drugs. I never knew that until this am. Massive hives - she's avoided them her whole life. I went through the list of foods with her, and she doesn't eat coconut because it makes her sick, so does shrimp. She washes her face just with water because soap bothers her. But she never knew about sulfites. I think she'd notice more things, except that she cooks everything from scratch, so she automatically avoids a lot of sulfite sources. (which are processed foods, mostly) Talk to you later!

Hey, could you guys who have problems with sulfites make sure that you add a post to this thread so I can add that to the list? http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=255
That is if you haven't already done so. :)
Thanks,
Mike
