Any idea how long it takes to get over a steroid OD?

Thanks Granny,

Out of all these problems your currently having at least it's great to hear can rely on Entocort for relief. Thats good news. I'm so glad it works for you. Do you plan to start using it again when things calm down? Just curious, how long had you been taking it, what dosage, did you stop cold turkey when you started the Dexpak? Did you have normal bowel movements, or any side effects? Last question: Have you made any diet changes along with the Entocort?

Hang in there and take care.

Love,
Joanna

I stopped taking the entocort when I started the Dexpak.. since they are all steroids.

Norman is still in residence... a week off the Dexpak and without entocort. I probably had the equivalent of a month's worth of prednisone in about 8 days!

Oh I made diet changes all right... I ate everything in sight that I had not been able to eat for over three years.. and gained 25 pounds since I went on entocort the first week of November 2005..LOL

My main problem now is my blood pressure... It is spiking up over 190/110 more often ... twice yesterday... it does come down with the clonidine but it does worry me that I could stroke out with any one of the spikes.....

You know . . . you'd think that a doctor would know enough not to prescribe something like Dexpak, which has a high initial dose of corticosteroids, to someone who already has a significant level of corticosteroids built up in her blood. That smacks of malpractice.

The very least he could have done, would have been to recommend that you ignore the directions that come with the Dexpak, and use a much lower dosage rate for the initial stage, to allow for the Entocort that was already in your system. Either he doesn't understand corticosteroids, or he wasn't thinking clearly that day.

I hope your blood pressure gets straightened out pretty soon. This has gone on way too long.

Tex

P S Wow! You were up pretty early this morning.

Blood pressure spiked at noon!

Yes the nurse who gave me the steroids should be shot!..LOL

I called the service and they got back to me and said I should take the clonidine every 8 hours and come into the office... they suggested I see that same nurse again immediately... I said NO WAY she did this to me after I specifically said I was afraid of it!

I have an appointment for tomorrow at 11:45. I also have a call into the gastro doc.. to see if he knows anything about dealing with a steroid OD. Plus what do i do when the D comes back... it IS starting to come back!

I am in a mess to say the least.. my neighbor is a PA with her own practice and she said I could stroke out at any time if we don't get this under control.

On the plus side...the therapy for my back seems to be going well...

Grannyh,

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe you shouldn't be in the hospital, with close monitoring. I just read a little more about dexamethasone. While prednisone is rated as an intermediate-acting corticosteroid, dexamethasone is rated as long-acting.

I don't know if it's even possible, but you could be suffering from both an overdose and withdrawal symptoms, at the same time.

I'm concerned,
Tex

P S Well, that's good news on your back, at least.

My gastro doc called me back... he has some ideas of tests to be run to make sure it isn't something even worse..but said it will take time to get the stuff out of my system. Since I am on 3 clonidine a day... I should be ok til they find something that will regulate my blood pressure permanently.. not my idea of a good thing... more drugs... but Ihave to deal with one thing at a time.

He said he uses entocort to wean his krohn's patients off prednisone since entocort releases in the gut.. when I need the entocort I should be able to take it.. only about 10% of it is absorbed...

Will see what the fam doc says in the morning...

I am concerned too...

That's good news, that your GI doc called back. I agree with him on the Entocort. It's pretty safe stuff, compared with the other corticosteroids.

Good luck with your visit with your doc in the morning.

Went to the gastro doc on Thursday and they put me in the hospital.. found a mastoid infection on the cat scan but the brain is fine.

The blood pressure is still not under control but insurance would not let me stay another day for monitoring without an iv in my arm.. i don't need an iv so I am home again. If the meds don't keep it under control then it is back to the emergency room. Don't know how they will ever get any needles in me.. both arms are black, purple, blue and some yellow..LOL

New med routine is antibiotic twice a day for 4 more days, clonidine twice a day and norvasc...

Dang,

It seems that every time you go to the doctor, some new problem shows up. I hope that you can start gaining some ground on all these issues pretty soon, without any more problems developing.
