die off symptoms from GF diet?

Post by thedell19 »

When you start on the GFDF diet is there a peroid that you experience die off symptoms from the gluten and casien trying to exit the body? For the past two days I have had a headache, stomach discomfort, and nausea and I hope it is just from the gluten and casien exiting my body. ANyone else have this happen as well?

Maybe its UC maybe its MC? Who knows at this point, but at least I know my intollerances now... so heres to the road to healing!

The gluten and casein should normally be gone from your body within about 30 or 40 hours after ingestion, just like any other food component. As the symptoms resolve, you should feel better, not worse. I would have to guess that something else is causing those symptoms. You might even be having a reaction to a med, or one med might be antagonizing another. As I recall, you're still taking several anti-inflammatories. All but one of those would seem to be redundant.

Those symptoms are consistant with constipation. Is that a possibility? You may be overdoing it with all the meds, and calcium carbonate to boot. In come cases, it's easy to overdo it, when trying to control diarrhea. You have to strike a balance. Some MCers find that their symptoms fluctuate between D and C.

Or, it could be a persistent "bug", as you mentioned before.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Well I polled the celiac.com forum as well and some said that they experience die off symptoms. One good example of why it may cause die off symptoms is because to some wheat has an opiate effect and likely to have withdrawl symptoms.

Terps,

My hunch would be on a bug that you picked up in Mexico if the symptoms don't improve. My girlfriend has a condo in Playa del Carman and picked up a bug when she was there over new year's......as did all of her house guests. It was stubborn and took eventual antibiotic treatment to get rid of it after a number of weeks of suffering.

But I hope it's just "die-off". I don't think that has been a major issue on this board, however. Hadn't you been cuttting back on wheat and dairy in recent weeks, even before starting the "official" GF/DF diet?

Yeah I had kinda been cutting back but on vacation I ate bread at every meal most days. So I would assume that would nullfiy any effects of a semi gfdf diet before the vacation.

My wife just told me that she has had D all week as well so it must be a bug. I will ask my GI on Monday for some Xifaxan (anti biotic that focuses on gut) because I dont want to be struggling with the bug for longer than a week.
