My most recent experience with Rice
Hi fellow rice avoiders,
OK, I broke down recently and took my rice cooker out of the pantry, dusted it and cooked one of my famous rice/meat/veggie meals in it. I ate it three times per day for two or three days in a row and guess what - YES, you guessed it, BLAH, diarrhea again.
What the heck was that?!! It is the first time I have noticed a connection between rice and my symptoms.
I do eat rice in very small amounts occasionally, w/o having noticable problems, like when I eat an Organic Sunshine Burger or when I have tiny rice noodles with my meal cooked on a mongolian grill at my favorite local dumpy chinese restaurant (only place I eat out).
The rice cooker is back on the shelf for now. I will bring it back out next time I feel like getting sick LOL!! Until then I am back on a grain free diet.
Love,
Karen

I can’t eat rice either. I suspect it is the same old sad song ”The Lectine Lament”. We may not know the words but certainly we can all hum the tune.
Been away for awhile working but had no luck finding Buckwheat before I left. Nice to read a bit tonight and find that Polly did so well with it. All the stores close by that carry Bob’s Red Mill products carry everything but the Buckwheat. I am hopping against all hope that it might be a nice alternative to rice .
Looking forward to putting my feet up with the day off tomorrow. Yea right.

Well dang, Karen,
That's bad news. I can remember when you practically lived on the vittles prepared in that rice cooker. I can't recall, though, if this was before, or after you were symptom free.
Do you think that rice has been a problem all along? Is there a chance that you might have picked up some rice which was "enriched" by means of gluten?
It's kind of depressing to think that your diet might be regressing at this point.
Love,
Wayne

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I have a question, Matthew, and anyone else like Polly, and me, who has a problem with grains:
1. Do you know of any grain that you CAN eat?
2. Do you also have problems with sugar?
3. Do you have problems with potatoes or root carbohydrates?
4. Do you have problems with high carb vegetables?
(I gess what I'm trying to determine is whther we have problems with grains, or carbs in general)
Second Catagory of questions:
1. Do you have problems with fats?
a. can you eat egg white but not the yolk?
b. are some fats more digestible than others for you?
c. have you noticed problems with fats derived from grains? Canola, sunflower maybe (I'm not sure these are technically grains, but asking anyway
d. Is lean meat tolerated better than fatty meat?
This is from WAY out in left field, but I have been thinking about Whipples Disease, and the fact that those that have it have distinct problems digesting carbs and fats. Could there be a small percentage of MCers who have inflammation and malabsorbtion of fats and carbs due to the Whipple bacterium?
Love, Marsha
P.S. I apologize for being "Out There". This is just food for thought.

Second Catagory of questions:
1. Do you have problems with fats?
Not usually, unless it is super fatty.
a. can you eat egg white but not the yolk?
Not sure. Still testing eggs.
b. are some fats more digestible than others for you?
Not that I am aware of...
c. have you noticed problems with fats derived from grains? Canola, sunflower maybe (I'm not sure these are technically grains, but asking anyway
Yes, react to canola oil. Haven't tried sunflower.
d. Is lean meat tolerated better than fatty meat?
Usually do better with fish and poultry over red meat.

Marsha, my doctor just checked me for Whipples. I don't have any visible changes in the small intestine on biopsy that would indicate the disease. I think my problems come from the h. pylori creating gastric permeability so unprocess antigens leak out. Esp. since sugar is processed in the stomach not the small intestine, I think this is why I am so sensitive to it.
Interesting survey! Good luck with it! Celia

Good questions.
1. Do you know of any grain that you CAN eat?
No, but I have not tried rice in three years. At the time it was a problem. So many things have improved that I may someday give it a trial again
2. Do you also have problems with sugar?
I used to . It is rare that I eat cane sugar just on general heath principals. I can eat a lot more fruit now than I could three years ago so things have improved a lot. Honey and maple syrup are not problems but since I don’t eat bread anymore I can’t think of anything to put them on.
3. Do you have problems with potatoes or root carbohydrates?
The few times I have eaten potatoes recently I had no problems even though I thought they were a problem at one time. The only times I have eaten them have been when I was a guest at someone's home for dinner since I much prefer the root vegetables, and winter squash. It is hard to enjoy potatoes when I used to eat them slathered in butter and sour cream.
I tried some bread sticks made with tapioca flour that did not sit well at all. Maybe their was something else in the mix.
4. Do you have problems with high carb vegetables?
I eliminated green beans but no longer consider them to be a vegetable but rather a legume
(I guess what I'm trying to determine is whether we have problems with grains, or carbs in general)
It seems to just be the grains
Second Category of questions:
1. Do you have problems with fats?
Canola oil seemed to be a problem so for several years all I have used is Olive oil. The fat in Chicken, Pork chops, Bacon and beef cause no problems.
a. can you eat egg white but not the yolk?
I eat an average of about six whole eggs a week with no problems
b. are some fats more digestible than others for you?
Other than the canola oil they are all the same.
c. have you noticed problems with fats derived from grains? Canola, sunflower maybe (I'm not sure these are technically grains, but asking anyway
Canola seemed to be a problem and I like the olive oil so much that I have never had a reason to buy or use sunflower oil.
d. Is lean meat tolerated better than fatty meat?
I have always liked at least some fat on meat but tend to buy the leaner ones until I want to barbecue and then pick the lean packages that look like they have a little more fat on them. Either way I tolerate both quite well
Hope this helps
Love

cool discussion you opened, Marsha - a long list of questions LOL!!
Wayne, nothing has really changed here, thankfully, as soon as I quit eating the rice meals I went back to normal, so to speak, or like we used to say: "Norman returned".
I may have been sensitive to rice all along - I don't think this is an immune system response the same way it is with gluten; but maybe I just don't WANT to think it is. I still feel great and have company of Norman when I eat a little rice as I described before.
I think I have a tendency to ignore mild symptoms - they will go away, I think to myself; and they do. But the rice induced symptoms just kept getting worse every day until I finally realized that I had full blown diarrhea. I had to take it seriously.
Have a good night, Matthew - enjoy your time off; you deserve it!
Love,
Karen

Dear Celia,
It helps to know you've been tested for it . . .
Here's how I rate on these questions:
1. Do you know of any grain that you CAN eat?
no - I've tried wheat, rice, rice flour, cornstarch, corn chips, polenta, corn flour, oatmeal, popcorn. Even though I thought corn was ok for me, I recently was clean of it for about 2 weeks, and then had a noticable reaction when it was reintroduced.
2. Do you also have problems with sugar?
yes. But small amounts seem to be ok, below 25 g perhaps; I'll get some gas, but not D.
3. Do you have problems with potatoes or root carbohydrates?
Not nearly as much as with grains, but now I'm questioning them, and I think it would be interesting to do what I did with corn (abstain 100% for 2 weeks, and then reintroduce)
4. Do you have problems with high carb vegetables?
maybe: I don't eat canned or fresh corn because it seems to upset my stomach - It might be the fiber, though. Same with popcorn. The low carb vegetables not only don't upset my stomach, they seem to heal it and are really soothing: cabbage, celery, green beans (despite the legume thing, but I always eat canned and maybe that helps).
Second Catagory of questions:
1. Do you have problems with fats?
Canola and sunflower, I think so, but these are in fried chip products, and you never know exactly which ones are used. Also had problems with cod liver oil pills and major problem with flax oil, but both were in gell caps (I wonder about the capsules)
a. can you eat egg white but not the yolk?
currently testing -Can't eat eggs except as garnish occasionally - scrambled or fried definitely not. But I scrambled an egg white yesterday and ate it to find out what would happen. Too soon to tell.
b. are some fats more digestible than others for you?
?I seem to be fine with all fats in meats, although red meat is best (fat cut off, extra lean hamburger), fish, then pork (even bacon and Jimmy Dean sausage original), then chicken. Those with the most chance of a reaction are turkey & tuna
c. have you noticed problems with fats derived from grains?
yes Canola, sunflower , flax oil in caps, cod liver oil in caps, but haven't tried either without the caps.
d. Is lean meat tolerated better than fatty meat?
Maybe, but I eat bacon and J.D. sausage, and those are very fatty. Hummm.
Thank you so much for answering this survey. I don't know what to make of it. Picture me scratching my head ....
Love, Marsha

Just an update,
I ate a scrambled egg white without a single problem, so I'm eating two today to see what happens.

Karen,
I discovered a problem with rice about two years ago and gave it up. Recently I've been experiementing eating it. I started off once a month with no problem. Went to once a week (finally got to go back to my sushi resturant!!!) and did fine. Two weeks ago I only waited four days and suffered. I'm going back to once a week to see how that works out for me.

Be kind to everyone, because you never know what battles they are fighting.
Marsha,
1. Do you know of any grain that you CAN eat? Rice once a week or less (still experimenting)
2. Do you also have problems with sugar? None at all, though I find sweet things I used to like are way too sweet for me now.
3. Do you have problems with potatoes or root carbohydrates? None
4. Do you have problems with high carb vegetables? None
1. Do you have problems with fats? Of course I don't eat corn or soy oil. Canola doesn't cause me any problems and I use it for the occasionall deep fat frying. Otherwise I stick with olive oil, virgin or light.
a. can you eat egg white but not the yolk? I can eat whole eggs.
b. are some fats more digestible than others for you? No problems with fats now, they seemed to go right through me before Norm was a constant companion.
c. have you noticed problems with fats derived from grains? Canola, sunflower Again, I just avoid corn and soy oil.
d. Is lean meat tolerated better than fatty meat? Makes no difference.

Could there be a small percentage of MCers who have inflammation and malabsorbtion of fats and carbs due to the Whipple bacterium?
Possible, but I've found that the longer I follow the intolerance free diet, the better these problems become.

Hi Jean,
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. It sure sounds like it's a slow process healing, but it can happen, huh? I did eat eggs for a while, but like your experience with rice, I can only eat one egg, maybe once a week, but any more than that and I suffer for it. So I backed off on my egg experiment.
