Organic Foods

Post by Polly »

Morning All!

Yep, I know that organic foods are more expensive. However, I just read a study that found that organic foods contain 30% more of the healthful nutrients (antioxidants, flavinoids, trace minerals, etc.) than food grown in the conventional way. This is significant, I think.

Considering that MC can cause malabsorption and malnutrition, as well as the expense of daily vitamins and supplements, not to mention the potential harmful effects of chemicals, it would seem that buying organic foods whenever possible might actually be cost-effective for some of us.

I have been making more frequent trips to Whole Foods lately, and I cannot believe how much better some of the organic produce actually tastes to me. For example, their red-leafed kale and collards are far superior to those from my local grocery store. Same with the apples.

In view of the damage to the pocketbook, it might make sense to buy organic in the case of the fruits/veggies that contain the most pesticides.......I think strawberries rank number 1.

Anyway, just a little food for thought.............

Love,

Polly

Here Here...Now if my area had a good souce for fresh organic produce I'd be all set! My own strawberry plants are blooming well, and the first fruit is starting to develop. The rhubarb is growing well, the peas, corn and carrots are in, and this week the tomato, beans and cucumbers will go in. Raspberry patch is leafing out nicely, and I planted 3 more blueberry bushes for a total of 6. I do use fertilizer in the soil before planting, and all but the blueberries mentioned above are downstream of the septic system (how much more organic can you get!). If that isn't enough, the farm up the street is advertising "Cow Stuff" for sale cheap. Its pretty funny actually...Connor's Cow Stuff...100 lb and 50lb bags for like less than $5.

I do love fresh.

What a timely post. On my evening walk I noticed that the farmers market that is about a twenty minute walk from my house will open next weekend. I often arrive early after an early walk or bike ride. It is an opportunity to talk to the growers before the crowds appear. What a great group of people, so into what they provide. I suspect that one of the reasons it tastes so good is because it is harvested just before they bring it to the market. So much of what I eat all winter, organic or otherwise, has sat in a warehouse or truck for some days before it gets from California to my kitchen. It’s no wonder that organic and fresh tastes so good.

I so enjoy digging up a small piece of the earth and growing at least a salad garden. Nothing like picking a salad out of the backyard and eating it moments later.

To all the gatherers

Love

HAHAHAHA, Barb!

Crabgrass!! You are a hoot!

Matthew, I had forgotten about the farmer's markets. Thanks for the reminder. A perfect place to shop for great produce now! What do you grow in your salad garden?

Polly

Farmers' Markets are awesome!! Our downtown association sponsors one every Saturday - *year-round*!! (One of the perks of living in CA  ) They block off one of the side streets - it's sort of a social thing on Saturday mornings - you will almost always run into someone you know! The humane society is also there in the adjoining park, trying to get some of their animals placed....it's a great event!

I miss the abudnace of fresh organic produce I had access to in California. The choices are so much more limited in Albany and the prices so much higher! Celia

Organic is definitely the way to go and with the amount of veggies we eat, it does make a difference.

Hurrah for Farmers' Markets.

Love, Maggie
