Maggie - about stocking up....

Post by CAMary »

You mentioned in the pandemic poll that you have 6 mos of food stores. I am very impressed!!! How did you do this?? I am trying to get my stuff organized and in place - between pandemics and the next big earthquake, I need to pull this together!! With the dietary restrictions, what do you have on hand? I've been trying to figure out how to best do this - also I can't afford to drop a ton of money at once - I'm thinking of adding a few items to my weekly grocery list and building up slowly....Also do you rotate the food into your diet so things don't expire?

Inquiring minds....

Hi Mary & Barbara,

The larder right now exists of many canned veggies (would lose electric on freezer), minimum 5 lbs. of rice, 8 to 10 bags of pasta, 20-30 cans of beans, flours, dried milk, dried fruits, crackers I can eat at least 10 pkgs, canned milk, dried beans, canned tomatoes (for Frank) approximately 20 cans of soup, 8 bottles of juice, much bottled water, canned fruits, etc. etc. etc.

It is a joke that I am Irish and can never be without 6 months of food - remember the famine. One thing to bear in mind is to have a good number of foods that do not require water to make since it will be scarce, especially in our case since a water pump gets it to us.

Also, one learns to eat less when they are rationing which is what would happen.

Buy a little extra each week and set up a storage area. It does work and when you use something, replace it or you will be lacking when the times comes.

Love and luck to both of you, Maggie

Maggie,

It's super you have this food stocked and it's a comforting thing for your family. Curious, what can you eat out of what you have stocked ? I have stocked alot of foods for my family that I cannot eat. I know they will be okay, but I might starve!!

Love,
Joanna

Hi Joanna,

Most of what I stock I can eat. Frank eats the GF diet, for the most part with me, so that is no problem. The tomatoes are for him but the rest I can do.

By the way, Frank is adamant about expiration date rotation and we keep a good eye on the dates, and if they are in jeopardy of expiration they are used and replaced.

Love, Maggie
