The buildup of gas, (due to the failure of the normal release mechanism), is the main cause of the bloating, of course, and a major contrtibutor to the abdominal pain. Anytime we're having an active episode, though, unless we're securely seated on the "throne", most of us are too chicken to play "rectal roulette". It's a very dangerous sport with active MC. LOL.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I really hope that you dont have to do the SCDiet the whole time; that is a really restrictive diet. I cant remember- what were your results from Dr Fine? Were you intolerant to everything on the tests?

Dr Fine test shows positive for gluten and casien but negative for soy, eggs, and yeast

i was intolerant to gluten dairy soy yeast and eggs. I had a blood test
about 5 years ago that said I was intolerant of almonds , kidney beans, lettuce, scallops, oysters, dairy, eggs yeast, ...but not soy or wheat. I cut those things out for a year(I'd eliminated diary a long time ago as it was obvious that that wasn't agreeing with me). I was able to eat eggs and lettuce again...but not the others.
I'm guessing at this point...but I don't think I'm having a bad reaction to the rice. I think I was eating too much of it and will eventually be able to have some when the D is gone.
I think the major problem I was having (which I think you brought up as well) is that I was eating too much raw friut....especially the coconut.
So, I'm definitely going to try rice again down the line. I would love your recipe for banana muffins too.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have to be on it long term either, but there are some interesting recipes in there using nut flours.

And congratulations on the firm POOP Bingo - it is an amazing experience when it happens the first time; like you are getting a promise somehow that you are still human (something I wasn't always sure of when my bowel movements happened w/o my control day and night - I felt more like a PIG).
It is great that you have been able to achieve such success already - I compliment you for your dedication and your excellent skills in working systematically with this food process. You are very good at it and you can thank yourself for your feeling of better well being. Things are going to get even better, I know they will. Small steps are extremely important in working on fine tuning this diet - detail orientation is a must. And then again you need to look at the big picture and give yourself a pat on the back for all you've already accomplished.
I haven't read Elaine Gottschalls book but it is my understanding that it is a superb book - especially for those who suffer from Ulcerative Colitis and perhaps also Crohns. Most of us MCers have a problem with dairy which makes the diet incompatible with our needs - but of course we still need to eat a simple diet consisting mainly of unprocessed foods.
It is a good idea to read your labels carefully no matter what - become a good label reader. You don't necessarily need to learn what all the chemical components mean; I have a rule of thumb to not purchase(eat) items that contain more than 4-5 ingredients on the list - I feel safe if I understand what the ingredients are and I stay away from food that has ingredient names I don't understand.
Imagine and Pacific both make excellent chicken broth that is safe for me too.
Wayne pointed out to you that corn/corn derivatives may be a problem for you in addition to the "foods" the Enterolab report indicate. I avoid corn derivatives. Applesauce is an item you CAN get w/o corn syrup - I am trying to think of which Applesauce brands are safe - basically none of the regular brands that you find at the grocery stores; I once tried Mott's Organic Applesauce and it was w/o corn at the time but when I checked back the next year I think they had added corn syrup to it. Try your health food store for safe applesauce; I know mine has some.
I eat Jennie's coconut macaroons - but they have egg whites so you can't do them. Perhaps it is better to eliminate the coconut for now since you feel it could be questionable for you?! Trust your intuition here until you prove yourself wrong later.
It is easy for us with intolerances to get enough protein since we can actually tolerate many/most meats. I found in my healing process that eating meat was one of the things that agreed the best with my gut.
One word on going from major D one day to firm poops the next day - yes, that was my experience too - it seemed to me that healing was not an issue with me it was simply getting rid of the intolerances from my diet. It was an amazing experience because when you have that "violent" kind of D you think your body must need healing; how could it not? But actually the D is evidence that the immune system works perfectly and your body is simply doing what it is designed to do - get rid of the offending matter as fast as possible (D!).
Again, you are doing a fabulous job with your diet - Thumbs up for you big time and best wishes for another great day!

Well, I had two softly formed BMs this morning.
i will stick with my simplified diet...no raw fruit except banana, no coconut, no rice or rice protein powder. All my labels check out....no corn syrup. So I guess this is where the patience part comes in....something

Do any of you know about the relationship between the thyroid gland and insulin levels?
I'm going in on Wed. to have an iodine uptake test...my tsh is lowish...making my slightly hyperthyroid. My fasting bloodwork came back with very low insulin levels. Everything that I come up with says that this is related to type one diabetes ...which I don't have...and not insulin resistence. So I'm very confused. My blood sugar was normal. Does anyone know if these two things are related? I feel like it's the low insulin that's making me feel so poorly.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the thyroid gland definitely has an affect on insulin levels. An overactive thyroid may increase insulin requirements. Here's a site that gives some information on that relationship, and how autoimmune diseases are involved. Though this is primarily a site for diabetics, note the paragraph on the thyroid gland about mid-ways through the article:

Thanks for the great info. I think I'm just a big hormonal mess. I'm hopeful that this new endocrinologist will look at the whole picture....thyroid, adrenels, and insulin problem. I'm really starting to believe that my D is due to more than just the MC. I know that's a big part....but this hormone imbalance often refers to rapid transit and D as sideeffects also.
I checked with the hospital about the contents of the pill I have to take....they assured me it was just salt and iodine...so hopefully that will be easy to tolerate.(for the uptake test)
