Genes and the Mind
I am reading a delightful book called The Divine Code of Life, Awaken Your Genes and Discover Your Hidden Talents by Kazuo Murakami, Ph. D., one of the top geneticists in the world.
It is fascinating. Did you know that only 5-10% of our genes are actually working? The majority remain inactive, unless they are "turned on." It has been scientifically proven that there is an "on-off switch." Murakami himself has scientifically proven that one's state of mind can effect our genes in an experiment involving diabetics.
I was amazed to learn that genes are not static, but active every minute, every second of our lives. They are the body's main control panel. He believes that genes hold the key to understanding the body's natural healing mechanism, and that we can activate and deactivate our genes through out mental processes.
Prior to this I was reading The Molecules of Emotion by Candace Pert, Ph. D. Candace was the discoverer of the opiate receptor in the brain and has made many innumerable discoveries connected with the peptides, which she calls the molecules of emotion. Her hypothesis is similiar to Murakami. The difference being that now science is actually beginning to prove these therories.
I think and hope that medicine and healing are going to take dramatically new directions in the near future! Too many scientists are starting to wak up for it to remain static.
The Murakami book in particular is an easy, fun read. And very uplifiting!

I beleive in magic!
Hi Celia,
Sounds like you're doing some really interesting reading. One day when I'm done reading every diet and recipe book I can find, I'd love to investigate these. I'm with you on the scientists and doctors taking a look at the whole picture. It's too bad we have to get sick before we realize how limited our options are now.
Love, Cristi

Celia... I believe in this....The mind can do many things. My mother was a nurse but was physic and passed some of that to her children and Grand children...But she used to make us visulize that the pill we were taking when we were sick would gobble up all the bad infection as we swollowed it. I visualize all the time. I may have to read this book. Love Oma
May I be more compassionate and loving than yeterday*and be able to spot the idiots in advance
Celia,
Thanks for the tip on Murakami's book. Sounds like something I will want on my bookshelf.
"Molecules of Emotion" is one of my all-time favorite books. A VERY important book. I guess you know that many mainstream scientists ostracized Pert and attempted to discredit her. But we know that she will have the ultimate last laugh, right?
I can't believe how many people who call themselves scientists have such closed minds. If something can't be proven by the scientific method, then it is ignored. And I believe that many of the "answers" in the future (especially related to health) will require some quantum leaps in thinking - outside of the box, so to speak. Of course, the science will catch up eventually, with folks like Pert and Murakami in the game.
If you have any more recommendations, fire away. I imagine you've read Gary Zukav and Cabat-Zinn. Many of my books are about Buddhism and mindfulness.
Namaste,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
The ironic thing about scientists who require absolute rigid scientific proof of every concept, before they will even consider it to be plausable, is that by doing so, they are admitting their own inadequateness. IOW, just because they're unable to find a way to verify it by their known and accepted methods, doesn't prove that the concept is invalid. Instead, it may simply prove that they are inept scientists.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I've done very little (none actually) reading on these subjects but this sounds like a good place to start since you mention the Murakami book is easy, fun and uplifting.
Thanks for the referals, it all sounds very intriging. Wouldn't we all like to learn to unlock some dormant genes and discover hidden talents?
Love,
Joanna
