Skin care products

Post by celia »

Do you all stay away from wheat in skin and hair products. I have a handy size Kiss My Face Ultra Moisturizer that I retrieved from my back pack from my vacation, but I noticed it has hydrolyzed wheat protein. I suppose that is a no-no?

Hi Celia,

I was just looking at my shampoo and conditioner in the shower this morning and they both list wheat germ oil. I kept my mouth tightly closed but I'm going to replace them soon. Does any one know if there are body lotion lines or make-up lines that are all gluten free? Whenever I see a list it has one product from one line and another from a different line...and so on.

Can you absorb the gluten through your skin or not?

I was just told that when I feed my dogs from now on that I should wear a mask as I could inhale the kibble dust and be exposed to gluten that way.

Love,
Cristi

I think if you go to celiac.com these questions and concerns are addressed. Most of us don't need to be that vigilant (Jean is an exception, I know! there may be others...) and unless you have dermatitis herpatiformis, skin contact is generally not an issue. Generally ingestion refers to consuming via the digestive tract, however, inhaling and touching gluten can be problematic for a small percentage of GS people...

I personally handle gluten when preparing lunch for my kids on a daily basis and use cosmetics containing wheat protein - there is probably a list @ celiac.com for GF cosmetics as well. I've never had a problem/reaction, so I don't worry about it....

Hi All,

You can't absorb gluten through your skin, but you can get it on your lips and ingest it that way. I'm pretty sure you can't inhale it either. I feed birds every day and don't get contaiminated unless I put my hands in my mouth before I wash them.

Dog and cat food hasn't bothered me either, as long as I wash my hands and make sure it doesn't get on any dishes I'll use later.

I found the only skin care/shampoo that I have to worry about is lip stick/chap stick. I got pure coconut oil to use as lip balm.

I agree with Jean about inhaling gluten. I have a grain cleaning facility, and we sometimes clean wheat seed, (I also grow it), and I have never been able to detect a problem caused by inhaling the dust. Of course, I try to minimize it as much as possible, but when you're handling grain, you can't avoid at least some degree of exposure to dust.

A few years ago, I helped a friend unload a load of oats, under bad conditions, (no dust protection), and I inhaled a lot of oat dust. For over six months, I had bronchial tube congestion and coughed up some rough looking stuff.

One night, about half-way through this episode, I woke up about 2 am, choking, with my air passages completely blocked with thick phlegm. Apparently, a large chunk of the stuff had broken loose and blocked my airways, and it wouldn't budge. I thought I was a gonner, because for what seemed like an eternity, I couldn't get even a wisp of air, no matter what I did, and I seemed to be getting weaker. Finally, about the time that I had given up hope, I managed to wheeze down a tiny amount of air, and then a little more, and I managed to cough it up. It was pretty tough to convince myself to try to get back to sleep, after that. LOL.

I had a few more tough nights after that, but none that were life-threatening. I don't believe that problem was connected with gluten, however. It was simply a matter of filling my air passages and lungs with irritating debris, and it could have been entirely avoided if I had taken the time to go back home and get a suitable dusk mask before tackling the job. I don't mess with oats any more. LOL. If someone wants oats cleaned, they have to take them somewhere else.

Wayne

Thanks everyone for the information.

Jean, I definitely won't put the Kiss My Face ultra moisturizer on my face or lips!

What a harrowing story Tex! Just shows you how fleeting life can be.

Thanks, Celia

Hi Everyone,
Well I'd be inclined to go by your experiences...if you feel that you haven't gotten sick by breathing gluten or through the skin then that is what I'd go by. I did want to let you know that I spoke with Dr. Fine's nurse and she said that I should be careful with dry dog food...to wear a mask if I couldn't get anyone else in the family to do it...as she thinks you can absorb gluten by inhaling it. I just wanted to pass that along as food for thought...doesn't sound like your experiences line up with this though. Or I could have misunderstood and she meant that the dust floats up to your lips and gets ingested there. Anyway, wanted to pass that along.

Christi,

I don't believe that this has ever been carefully researched, so she may just be cautious. I would think that if you were to breathe through your mouth, for example, some gluten-containing particulate matter would probably settle out in your mouth, and be subsequently swallowed. She also might be cinsidering the very real risk that at some point afteerwards, you will probably lick your lips, eat something without remembering to wash your lips first, etc.

This would probably fall into the trace amounts catagory, so the risk of a reaction might depend on your sensitivity to the allergen.

Celia and Cristi,

There was a time when I thought I was getting contaminated by skin absorption or inhalation. I even suspected my tampons! LOL. I did some experiments on my own and found that neither of these things were a problem. So, it's just my experience, but I am sensitive to minute amounts.

I think it's a good idea to have someone else feed the dogs.

BTW, I use Coppertone Sport Cream Sunscreen on my face and lips with no reaction. So it should be safe for all of us.
