Those are simply indicators to rank the relative number of posts that each member has made. Each time a new threshold for a certain number of posts is reached, that member's penguin catagory is automatically bumped to the next higher penguin rank. LOL.
If I remember correctly, the first threshold is 25 posts. When you reach that level, your penguins will start showing up.
We have a lot of bells and whistles on this site. We just like to have a little fun while we're at it. MC can be so miserable, that we tend to look for fun wherever we can find it.
