Calcium sources when GF/CF?

Post by Arosebud »

Today I started back on the GF diet and because I get so miserable from dairy, bloated, D, rapid pulse after drinking milk, I am wondering if I am also casein sensitive. What would be some good food sources of calcium to get the 1500 mg per day, other than pills? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Congratulations on starting the GF diet again! Good luck!

Some good sources of calcium---

The better quality bottled bubbly water like San Peligrino have good amounts of calcium or magnesium. It varies depending on the brand, so check the label.

Almonds
Collard Greens
Dandeloin Greens
Chard

...are a few of the sources that come to my mind.

Be well, Celia

Hi Sylvia!

I'll add my congrats too. Aren't lifestyle changes the pits?

Anyway, don't forget about calcium-fortified drinks, like apple juice, orange juice, grape juice, and V-8.

Also, you may want to check the forum titled "Links to Good Info Sites" Moremuscle (Karen) has a post about 8 from the bottom about calcium, titled "Calcium - important to read if you are dairy-free". There is also a calcium article there that tex posted.

Love,

Polly

Hi there,

I don't recall your age, but if you think you'll have to be off dairy, I suggest you get a baseline bone density NOW, rather than wait a while like I did. It's probably a good idea anyway, with the absorption issues we tend to have, and also the autoimmune component with osteoporosis.

You might also want to talk to your doctor about taking a large dose of Vit D3 if your bones appear below what they should be on this test.

Reason for advocating bone density, and preventive measures is because you don't want to end up like me with osteoporosis. People end up in a bad way with osteoporosis, but there are some things that can help, so the sooner you become aware of what's going on in your bones, the better.

Yours,Luce

Sylvia,

Good for you going gluten free again!!! You know it's the right thing to do. Be sure to talk to us often. We can help and sympathies and are glad to do it.

When worrying about calcium, don't forget to get a little sun when ever you can. I've read that 15 minutes without sunscreen is enough. That way your body can produce the vitamin D that is important in calcium absorption.

Kale is another wonderful calcium vegie! Carrots have some too, but not a super high one like the greens.

Then there's salmon (eat the bones in canned salmon) and sardines.
