mucous in stool
Hi,
Yesterday, for the first time ever, I noticed what appeared to be mucous in my stool. White stuff floating around; one part almost looked like a flat noodle. Since I don't have D., but the opposite, I don't think this can be a manifestation of MC. I've read that it can be a sign of parasites, which I think I have.
If you have any thoughts about this, please share!
We've been suffering the garage sale woes. We were rained out yesterday morning, but managed to get a few hours in during the afternoon. We had hoped to do it all on Saturday, but had to give most of our Sunday to this as well in no less that 95 degree weather. Not sure if it was really worth our precious time. We did much better posting things on Craig's list and my husband will be doing some auctions on e-bay.
Then, the Goodwill refused to take our remaining stuff because they had too much stuff, and the Salvation Army was closed! Rats!
Our place is almost completely empty and we have two weeks to go before I leave for Seattle to see my brother and my husband leaves for Munich to see his family.
It's sometimes an odd feeling and sometimes a liberating feeling!
Warmly, Celia

Celia,
Mucous accompanying BMs is usually an indication that the body is producing copious amounts of mucus, in order to help protect the mucosa of the intestine from further inflammation, due to an irritating agent in the fecal stream. Remember, not all MCers have D. Some alternate between D and C, and a very few rarely have D. Mucous with BMs is a fairly common occurence with MCers, during severe episodes.
You could possibly be having an MC reaction, or something that you are ingesting may be causing the defensive mechanism to be triggered, simply because it's presence in the lumen serves to irritate the mucosa. I wasn't aware that the condition is linked with parasites, but I suppose that it's possible in some cases. What type of parasites do you suspect. Helminths for example, (with the possible exception of tapeworms and flukes), usually cause fairly obvious symptoms, and tend to cause diarrhea, and eventually anemia. (There are exceptions, of course, such as using artificially-introduced populations of the pig whip worm to actually relieve the symptoms of MC in human hosts).
Normally, mucous is an indication of a relatively strong and widespread, (within the colon, at least), inflammatatory response. It's possible that something you are taking to treat the H. pylori may be causing an inflammatory response in your colon, due to the long-term exposure, or a cumulative effect. It might be a good idea to discuss this with your doctor, since it's possible that you might be treating a stomach problem, at the expense of your colon.
If the mucus were originating in your stomach, I don't believe that it would remain intact all the way to exit, but I could be wrong. The stomach normally produces a lot of mucus, in order to protect the mucosal surface of the stomach from damage due to the acid necessary to properly digest food. Presumably, I would think that the stomach mucus would be broken down by the enzymes in the duodenum, in a normal digestive system. (Of course, MCers do not have a normal digestive system).
I hope it's something minor.
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I have mucous sometimes. Sometimes quite a bit. Not when having D either, so I don't think you can just assume it's from parasites. I don't believe I have them.
Boy, I'll bet you are really stressing trying to get everything done before you leave. I sure be.

Thank you Tex and Shirley. It's helpful to hear your experience, Shirley.
Melissa - I feel really good! The possibility of a parasite came up through muscle testing by my chiropractor. There are stool tests for parasites, but apparently it's easy to miss them in testing. Instead of spending more money on testing, I decided to spend $28 on the month long treatment...a better deal. The muscle testing pointed out the h. pylori, which was confirmed by a blood test, so I have a fair amount of confidence about it when it's done by this particular chiropractor.
Tex, that's the first time that I've heard that some MC'ers rarely have D (I would fall into that category) or alternate between D. and C. I've had C. almost constantly since a few weeks before the HP diagnosis.
I did have an accidental 'glutening' about 5-7 days ago. But from what you say, Tex, it does't sound like eating a small amount of gluten in error one time would be likely to cause this problem.
To be honest, since I've felt better, I've been a little loose about my diet the last couple of weeks---- eating more fruit and some treats with natural forms of sugar (honey, for example) like the Leslie's Coconut Macaroons. I was also trying to test out rice for several days in a row. Guess, I'd better clean up my diet a bit to be sure it's not at fault. For a moment, I thought maybe I am just not digesting the coconut well...I guess that might be possible. Today, it looked like a little snowflake in the bowl. The amounts of mucous have definitely been small, but I take this as a strong warning sign.
I will mention this to my doctor. Thanks for the suggestion. I stop taking the Formula 734 (with the Bismuth) this week anyway, but continue with my liquid herbal formula until August 11th (for the HP).
I have no idea what type of parasite I might have. You don't have to know to treat them. Some parasites cause constipation, and mucous can also be a sign of some parasites. Like you say Shirley, it's good not to assume that it's the parasites. I finish the parasite treatment in two weeks so that will be a clue if it clears up then.
Things are actually going quite well with our move. We've sold almost everything now, and have two full weeks to tie up the remaining loose ends. Next weekend we are going to do a practice run with our packing to see how many bags we actually need. It is a little stressful because it's a big change, but pretty minor compared to the stress I've experienced in my life. But perhaps I am underestimating the impact.
Thanks again for this very useful information. What will I do without this forum for three years!
Hugs, Celia

Thanks Jean. That's good to know. I won't feel particularly alarmed about it.
I've been on the gluten free diet for a year now, but it's just been a few months on the totally casein free diet. When parasites die-off they release toxins which cause symptoms, and I imagine could easily cause inflammation, and hence the mucous. Since I am doing the parasites treatment, it seems possible there's a connection here.
All the best, Celia
