Weight Gain?
okay, I'm sure someone has read up on this....why again is it that many of us with a sensitivity to gluten (and or other things) don't loose weight, and if anything gain when eating gluten? I am very overweight right now and so sick of it! Last year a size 14 (already bigger than I want to wear...I think I look best at about a 12), but then boom I go straight to an 18 while on Lupron and now am a 20. I've been quite bad the last month about my diet (the gf one) and need to get back to it....I get so cranky and bitchy when I'm eating gluten. But I also desperately want to get rid of the weight without starving myself. I already feel like I don't eat that much.
Typical Day:
Breakfast: drinkable yogurt, serving of fruit (usually grapes, or banana, today watermelon slices)
Lunch: Lately its been rice cakes with hummus or cold cuts on them, another piece of fruit or candy (I know...but one serving of candy a day? I've done that for years!).
Dinner: Grilled Meat, rice or potato, and usually corn, or peas, or salad.
I am going for bloodwork soon...the nurse practitioner I saw wants to check my thyroid levels to see if they have gotten messed up in all the hormone issues of the last year, but I can't go do that (supposed to be fasting) until my ear settles down and I can get up and go without my antihistamine (been having wicked dizziness when getting up or lying down. I'm usually okay when in one position...its moving between the two.).

Katy-
I think it is good they are looking into your thyroid...all I can think of is activity?? I forget - are you mostly at your desk or walking around job sites? Maybe a combo of the two? All I can say is I was exercising regularly, then I injured my foot - my eating habits stayed the same, but I gained weight!! And I wasn't doing *that* much activity - just doing it on a regular basis...
It sounds like this may be a challenge with your current health issues - but it is always easier for me to exercise in the warmer weather - even if just a brisk evening walk since it stays light later....JMO but the hormones could definitely be a factor - my friend (who used to be my same size and exercises regularly) who has been through IVF several times is struggling with her weight - she blames the hormones...
I don't gain weight w/gluten - just the opposite - so I guess if I needed to quickly drop a few, a trip to the local pizza parlor would do it
Let us know what the doc thinks!

Hi Katy,
Six months ago I was in your shoes. Didn't eat much but could never lose weight. I had to exercise just to maintain. 6 months later and with MC I've lost so much weight and I've been trying sooo hard to get it back to a healthy place. Eating when I'm nausious is really hard. I'm eating twice as much as I was before but different stuff..no gluten and recently no grain to control D. I still can't gain. I think our hormones have a huge impact on our weight. Mine are messed up and that is what has caused the huge difference in my weight. It sucks either way (would never have believed that before).
I agree with Mary, an after dinner walk if you feel up to it will certainly help. good luck.
Love,
Cristi

I think we're all very different with this disease and I don't think weight plays that big of a role in direct correlation to it. I pooped my brains out for over a year before I was dx'd and didn't gain or lose a pound! I told my GI that was just so unfair. I did, however, recently lose almost twenty pounds after breaking my neck...no diet, absolutely no exercise, lots of coffee and pain killers...go figure? I don't suggest anyone try my method of weight loss, though
I believe prednisone plays a huge part in weight gain, but I don't think MC itself does.
Peg
(with her humble opinion as it is)

Katy,
Your diet definitely looks a bit meager to account for the weight gain. For me, the issue was carbs. Once I cut out the bad carbs, I lost weight easily. I saw a program on weight loss on Oprah Today and 2 things they recommended-
1. Don't eat anything white (white bread, white flour, white potatoes. etc.)
2. Don't eat after 7:30 pm.
I lost 20 lbs on the Zone diet and was never hungry. I know that's one that works for me. Good luck with sorting this out. Hugs, Celia

Hi Katy
Maybe it is the fruit, or perhaps the amount of fruit you are eating. Fruit is very high in sugar & I had to cut back drastically on the amount that I was eating. I gained a lot of weight on Prednisone & that along with not being as active did not help. Where I used to walk at least a couple of miles per day apart from other excersise i was not doing anything much more than sitting at the sewing machine or the computer. It all adds up. I am losing weight steadily now, not too quickly. Have cut back on portion size, fruit intake & stepped up excersise. I walk when I feel up to it & ride my trike at times when I don't. I also have a walk aerobics tape that goes for about 45 minutes which I use & it is great because my television is not too far from my toilet. Every little bit helps. I hope you find a solution. I know how depressing & uncomfortable it can be when you have excess weight & can't seem to lose it.
Good luck
Love

Hi Katy,
I don't have any answers, except that I know exercize makes a big difference, and can be the deciding factor in whether you lose or gain weight.
Also, your diet seems a little high in sugar (fruit, maybe the yogurt?, and even the peas and carrots). For veggies, try broccolli, cauliflower, and various lettuce greens as these have less sugar. Maybe this will help.
I'm sure you'll figure out what combination works for you - good luck!

Brenda,
What's the WW Core plan?
How was your trip. I KNOW it had to be H O T that weekend. It won't even get up to 90 tomorrow, but we might be underwater! Ha!
I think it's not at all uncommon for people who are sensitive to gluten, and continue eating it to gain until the damage is so great to the gut, that they begin malabsorbing fat, bigtime.
I know that I had been on a gaining track for quite a while, and then, when things got even worse, symptom-wise, I began to lose three or four pounds a year. Once I stopped the diarrhea and other symptoms with the gf and other stuff diet, my weight levelled off, and now, I managing to find ways to get too many calories in again, but at least I don't now have an unexplained wt. gain.
Hmm, Pegster, the Break Your Neck Diet! Has a certain RINGGGGG to it!
Seriously, are you feeling pretty good these days?
Yours, Luce

Luce,
Thanks for asking about the trip. Yes, it was hot. The Texas Youth bowling tournament runs from the beginning of June until the middle of August. It is nearly always hot in Texas during those months no matter where they have it! Next year it will be in El Paso - hot but probably not as humid.
WW Core plan is one of the Weight Watchers plans. This is the one they refer to as the no count plan. As long as you eat foods off of the core list you do not have to count points. I managed to lose about 35 pounds about two years ago. maintained it a little over 6 months and then gained it back. I am currently being treated for a bout of diverticulitis and have lost 10 pounds since being on the antibiotics. Maybe the diverticulosis started when I started the weight gain last November. If it did I was gradually feeling worse over time until the abdominal pain a couple of weeks ago. I see my GI this afternoon. From what I have been told, my list of forbidden foods will grow.
Send some of that rain up here. We are under a red flag warning again today. Cooler weather is a couple of days away if the weatherman is correct. What part of Houston are you in? My cousin lives in Kingwood. Take care.

Kate,
My two cents: I had a hard time controling my weight until I went gluten free. Now I'm back to normal without trying. I think that being overweight is as much a symptom of gluten intolerance as being extremely thin.
My sister looked like she had lost 20 lbs in 3 days just by going gluten free.
Good luck!!!
Love, Jean

Be kind to everyone, because you never know what battles they are fighting.
Brenda,
Would you believe it, my sister actually bowled in that in El Paso once. A bunch of them rode in a bus, and my sister got sick as a dog -- guess it was motion sickness. I wonder if we'd still get motion sickness since we're both off gluten? I've heard that mentioned as another autoimmune disease.
By the way, we're not anywhere near Kingwood. We're southwest, not too far from Bellaire, if you know where that is.
Conroe really got hit with many inches of rain today from the weather reports I saw.
Other places along the coast were particularly hit today. Drainage around town seems fine, it's just that rain was coming down so fast, it couldn't get to the drain fast enough without flooding.
I heard today that the most rainfall EVER in the whole USA was a few years ago in Alvin, Tx. (Hometown of Nolan Ryan) -- they had 42 inches in a 24 hour period. Now THAT'S a lot of rain! I don't remember ever hearing that before today.

Hi Katy,
I just wanted to weigh in on this topic. (get it? weigh in) anyway . .
when I eat grains, the lower half of my stomach swells up so much that it's uncomfortable, and for some reason, I get the munchies really bad. I've pondered it, and come to the conclusion that it's my body's reaction, in that situation, to want to eat a lot and flush the bad stuff out of the intestinal tract as fast as possible. And it works. I usually get such bad cravings for anything edible (premenopausal-like) that I feel even more uncomfortable from eating, but at least it triggers bowel movements. Maybe you're experiencing something like that? I imagine that the gluten, or lectins, or whatever is irritating the intestinal lining causes it to burn, swell, retain water, blister, weep . . . who knows what's going on in there? I picture it like an acid burn on the skin, only it's on the inside.
So I also end up gaining weight when I eat gluten, and feel really crummy the whole time.
I empathize with you. What works for me is to go low carb: meats, celery, cabbage, mushrooms, asparagus, artichokes, lettuce. Adequate protein will cause your body to drop water like crazy in 2-3 days - (for me 60-80 grams of protein a day). That alone can make you feel so good that it motivates you to maintain that feeling through diet, or exercise, or getting fresh air, etc.
Didn't mean to write a book, and take it with a grain of salt . . . I'm certainly not the expert. And I take thyroid medicine (that could be something to look into) and have taken steroids, too (which will cause your body to store fat no matter what you do diet-wise).
Love, Marsha
