Yelp - my grandsons are coming & it's going to rain all

Post by Carrie »

Hi everyone. My grandsons are coming down from Canada tonight to visit me for a week (Sam-10 and Seth-8) and if the weather forecast is correct, it's going to rain until Thursday!!! Do any of you moms and grandmoms have any ideas on what to do - rainy day activities? Also, I was thinking about going to the store and buying X-Bot or one of those games they can play on the tv as I know they don't have any at home...but I know nothing about which games are good. Thanks for your help!

Love,
Carole

Hi Carole!

I am sure they would absolutely LOVE a video game system. My suggestion would be to take them with you to Best Buy (or wherever) and let them pick it out. I'll bet they know EXACTLY what they'd want!!! As far as the games go, you can check with the salesperson to make sure they are appropriate for their ages. This would probably entertain them all week - in fact, 24/7! LOL! Also, they may want to pick out a few board games that they like - Battleship is always fun, as well as Clue, etc.

Is one of these boys the one who came to visit you last year?

Love,

Polly

Okay THIS I can help you with (my boys are 10 and 8  )

A game system would be HUGELY popular. However I would recommend Gamecube over X-box. More of the games for Gamecube are appropriate for kids - though many games come in a variety of formats for all systems - X-box was originally targeted for the 18-25 male demographic, so you will have to filter out a lot of the games that would be inappropriate - plus, I believe Gamecube is less expensive...games are rated (like movies) so check the boxes - E for everyone is a safe bet!

As far as games - you can RENT them at Blockbuster or Hollywood Video- which might be a better option (unless you plan to play it after they leave  ) also make sure you get *2-player* games - some of them are single player work through a maze etc. and my 10 year old plays and makes his little brother watch...not so fun for the watcher!

You will have to monitor/put limits on it as most of the boys this age would play ALL DAY if allowed!

My boys also like to play games - some of the oldies are the favorites - my dad taught them blackjack when they were learning their math facts, and they still love it! Mexican train dominoes and Yahtzee are also popular - as well as Battleship and other kids' classics...Oh and building with Legos is VERY popular in my house, too!

Cooking projects - make smoothies or cookies or something else kids like to eat - they love to help and if they help read the recipe it is a good review of fraction skills! LOL, that is the teacher in me talking!

You can rent movies or check them out at the library - our local theater is showing kids' favorites for free every Wed. this summer - it is stuff already out on video - but mine *love* to go to the theater and eat popcorn, never mind if they've seen the movie before! There are also a lot of good movies out right now for kids if you want to take them out to the movies...

If you have a bowling alley nearby that is another thing this age enjoys...

Enjoy your visit - they are great ages and lots of fun! My boys are a piece of cake right now - it is the 3 year old I am ready to sell to the gypsies, LOL!

Good luck,

Mary

Hi...I jumped-in late, but was going to suggest cards, board games....how about a trip to the library to pick out books? Or...do they like to draw?

Have fun! JJ

Thanks SO much Barb, Polly, Mary and JJ for your teriffic advice! Now I have lots of ideas to keep the boys happy all week. Special thanks, Mary, for your guidance on video games - I was clueless. You saved me from making an expensive mistake! As it was, se went to Best Buy yesterday afternoon and straight to the GameCube display. The boys are THRILLED and absolutely love it. They'd have played all night if I let them.

Yes, Polly, Sam was here last summer - more later. Gotta go make breakfast (pancakes and bacon - their favorite). Thanks, again, everyone - you REALLY saved the day!

Love,
Carole
