Hydration Question
Hi all,
When I am reacting to gluten, I feel like no matter how much I drink, I am not hydrating well. Yesterday was VERY hot and humid and I marched two parades. I don't think I was dehydrated because I was sweating and peeing some (although not as much as I would expect for the amount of stuff I drank).
But after the first parade while we were having lunch (my old office manager took me out) I started getting those uncomfortable reaction type symptoms.
I wonder if I'm not processes electrolytes well, or is it possible that the gut doesn't absorb water when irritated. Mind you I'm not having D, so this is why I am really wondering. If that were the case, I'd say I was definately having problems.

Hi Katy,
Hmmmmmm--good question. Maybe you were just perspiring more than you realized. If your colon wasn't extracting water properly, it would seem that you should have D.
If I overdo it on a hot day, I feel the same way, (as if I can't drink enough water, even though I'm already bloated from drinking so much water, and I'm still thirsty). It's a very uncomfortable feeling, but I don't believe that it has anything to do with a gluten reaction--it's just bloating caused by drinking water, (or whatever), faster than the body can process it. At least that's my take on it.
Marching in a parade can be pretty hot work, especially when the sun is shiing, and you're wearing a wool uniform. Do you feel ok today?

Hi Carrie,
What you are saying is correct, for normal people. For those of us who are corn intolerant, however, all the electrolyte-boosting energy drinks are off limits. Water is all that we have. Of course we can add a little salt, the way we used to do before all those drinks were invented.
Love,

Hi Katy, in all the years I worked construction from every thing from 20degrees to 130 degree weather, we always instructed out guy to drink something like Gatorade or any other sports drink that replaced the electrolytes. But also to drink water too along with it. Like a glass of gatorade and 1/2 glass water. Love Oma
May I be more compassionate and loving than yeterday*and be able to spot the idiots in advance
Earlier this year I purchased a 16 oz bottle of Balanced Electrolyte Concentrate and I still have half a bottle but I don't seem to need it too often.
It's sold by Allergy Research Group. I ordered it over the internet.
You only use 2 capfuls per 8 oz of water.
Ingredients: Proprietary blend of potassium, sodium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate, carbonate and bicarbonate ions in purified water.
Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone wants to try it.
I can't stand the taste of the sports drinks.
Love, Shirley

Well, I am feeling a bit better today but still not 100%. We went out canoeing this morning (well it was about noon before we headed out), and spent a good hour playing in the river at a small sand bar. Very cool and refreshing. Got a bit of a sunburn too
I'm very tired, but part of that is that it was 95 today and humid (I know Wayne and Oma, you guys are probably 100+!). The heat/humidity really takes a lot out of me.

Katy,
Ever since MC I have noticed that I just don't handle hot weather as well. Even when I am fine (no D, bloating, or known trigger ingestion) I tend to feel dizzy/lightheaded after working out in hot weather. I wonder if there could be some permanent problem as a result of the original MC??? I also feel lots of the time like I am dehydrated and can't get enough fluids.
I think you were the one who originally told me that the Gatorade instant mix contains no corn syrup - it has sucrose and dextrose. Although it does have citric acid, I do take it with me when I travel. The little foil packets are easy to pack.
Also, whenever I am somewhere and feel as if I am getting dehydrated/dizzy, I drink water and eat plain potato chips at the same time. Works every time for me.
Love,
Polly

Hi again. I found this recipe for a homemade rehydration drink at WebMD:
You can make an inexpensive homemade rehydration drink. Measure all ingredients precisely. Small variations can make the drink less effective or even harmful. Mix:
1 quart (950 ml) water
½ teaspoon (2.5 g) baking soda
½ teaspoon (2.5 g) table salt
3 to 4 tablespoons (45 to 60 g) sugar
If available, add ¼ teaspoon (1.25 g) salt substitute, such as "Lite Salt".
(source http://my.webmd.com/hw/health_guide_ato ... ar=hw86827 ).
I can't vouch for the taste (never tried it) but it seems like a good thing to know in case of emergency. Most people have all the ingredients on hand. I also like Shirley's idea of buying a concentrate. And I don't like the taste of commercial drinks, either.

Polly!
Great pic! Nice to "see" you two!
I have always had the feeling that I am dehydrated! Can NEVER get enough to drink. I ALWAYS have a glass of something to drink. Come to think of it - it started the same time I started having MC problems.
Interesting...................
I always thought it had something to do with my BP.

So I'm not the only one who feels this way sounds like. I think part of my problem is that when I start feeling that way, I get nervous that anything I eat is either going to not set well, or I'm going to all of a sudden have a reaction to it. Its a weird feeling...and it keeps me sometimes from doing what I need to for myself.
Welp, been a long hot one here and I promised myself I'd try to get to bed on time this week, so I must go find Molly to give her her pill, get Geoff to put lotion on my shoulders which are radiating nice heat, and get to sleep (which will probably happen in about 2 seconds)....Think Molly is in the other room...I hear hissing...she must be messing with Cocoa.

Hi Katy,
This probably won't make you feel any better, but I have to confess that the high was only about 90 here today--surprisingly pleasant, and it's getting so dry that the heat index wasn't bad, either.
I've had problems with running out of salt, (and probably a few other things), all my life, when I spend a lot of time working hard in hot conditions. Years ago, I took salt tablets, more recently, I drank gatorade, until the corn issue came up, so I appreciate the information on electrolyte concentrates, and home recipes, etc. I need to try that this summer. Thanks, Shirley and Carrie.

Thats for enjoying the weather and having low humidity
Our heat index is way up...haven't listened to the weather cause I don't really want to know how bad it is, but its MUGGY here!
I'll try to take better care of myself this summer.
