I'm Baaaack! (And Turtle News Too)
Hi All,
It was not much of a vacation. Hubby and I never even got to the beach.....which is about 1/2 block away from MILs. But we got a lot of work done. It's nice to be home so that we can relax again.
When I got home last night, I found a baby turtle in the pond!!! First one ever! It is SOOOOOO cute! About 1 and 1/2 inches in diameter with a dark green back and yellow belly. I am thrilled!!! I think it is an eastern painted turtle, which is an aquatic (pond) turtle. I saw it again today paddling around - fascinating. It is easily spooked, though. As soon as it sees me, it hightails it. Not like the green frogs, which are quite friendly.
Love,
Polly

Do you know where it came from? I will have to tell Ashlee, her favorite thing in the whole world is Turtles!
Sorry you didn't get to the beach! Darn it, you shouldn't have to work so hard on your time off. MIL needs to back off and let you have a vacation. GRRRRR!
Hugs,
Lori

Hi Lori!
I am assuming the turtle hatched in the soil near the pond and then crawled to the pond. I'll try to get a photo to show Ashlee. That's cool that she loves them too. BTW, has the move been cancelled? I hope so.
I think I'm going to let you speak to my MIL before the next trip. LOL!

Polly

Morning Polly,
So glad to see you back and congrats on the turtle. Sounds like an Eastern Painted to me. Miss the turtles from the old house but can still hear the frogs through the night.
I have chocolate here - always do.
Love, Maggie

Welcome home Polly.
Very cool to find new stuff around the yard. Hope that turtle makes it and you have more in the coming summers.
We're having fun watching all the stuff growing around our place. We don't have any water on the property (except for the stuff coming out of the sky endlessly), but are very near a beaver swamp and can hear frogs very loudly at night. Tons of birds on the property though. We might put small pond in, but it would probably be a project to go along with the gazebo, which right now is a pipe dream...maybe in a few years. We've got too many other things to do.

Ashlee would love a photo of your turtle. The move is still on, its looking like August. I still have a couple of months. I am keeping Kylee all I can. She is so darned cute, starting to talk and is so interactive. She refuses to walk. She got up the other day, out of the blue and took about 12 steps. She hasn't and won't take any more!
She is so young but I have been there from the minute she was born. Is it possible that she will remember me? I am trying not to worry about it now and enjoy the time we have, but I don't know how I will manage.
Hugs,
Lori
P.S. I'll talk to MIL....just let me at her! She would probably have me working my butt off!

Welcome home Polly, sorry you didn't get to the beach. That's so neat that you have a baby turtle. I love wild life. We have alot of it here. I was on my way to work the other morning and saw a turtle crossing the road. It was pretty good size....about 10 inches in diameter. I slowed down as I did not want to cause damage to the little guy or cause an accident. Love Oma
May I be more compassionate and loving than yeterday*and be able to spot the idiots in advance
Polly,
I love hearing about your pond stories, and welcome back. Waiting to hear about more spring pond stories. Just sounds wonderful!

Hi Polly,
The little turtle babies are so cute. We have had turtle babies in our yard which is not far from a big wild pond (in fact we can see the pond and walk to it right from our back yard and consider it OUR pond, LOL!!). I haven't seen any of the babies this year - probably because I haven't had time to do any yard work. But we have sometimes seen the mother turtles dig holes in the ground in our yard - sitting for a long time in one place and just kind of paddling with the back legs. We assumed they were spawning/laying eggs and covering them in the dirt.
I saw a Heron land and take off in that pond just a few days ago. It's great. This year it has rained enough that the pond is quite full - thus it appears much larger and it is truly a wonderful view from my kitchen windows.
Enjoy the little turtle baby birthday present.
Love,
Karen

More pond stories for Kathy! LOL!
After further research, I have decided that my turtle is a red-eared slider. It has the characterisitc red mark on the side of its head. I read that they are easily spooked and love to bask on rocks/logs in the sun. So, I built a rock pile in the center of the pond, and he climbs up onto the top rock and basks for hours! Now it is easy for me to see him every day. I can't believe how quickly he is growing - he seems to have doubled his size in the (less than one) week since I first saw him.
They eat snails (I've got plenty of little ones), insects, and baby fish and tadpoles (them too). As they get older they eat mainly the pond vegetation.
I also saw a baby wood frog today that must have just matured from the tadpole stage. It was sitting on a rock and was only one centimeter long. I kid you not! It was the teeniest little, fully-developed frog I have ever seen. I could even see his little "mask".
