Fortified orange juices/word of caution for gf

Fortified orange juices/word of caution for gf

Hi all,

I recently got a heads up that Minute Maid and another leading OJ company, maybe Tropicana, says that the only OJ that they can vouch for being gf is the plain OJ. (So happens that these are the two brands we have been using -- FORTIFIED of course.)

Reason these companies have given is that they apparently aren't the ones who make the supplemental calcium, etc., that goes into the forified OJ.

(This may turn out to be something that's not a problem in the end as we all know that the distillation process protects us from contamination if there's no chance of recontamination distillation, that is. Still, you never know how careful these places that provide them these ingredients are to make sure that other contamination doesn't occur.)

Anyway, I'm hoping that an "all clear" from those companies will soon be forthcoming, so we can go back to our fortified OJ. I have hopes because I don't seem to have a noticeable sensation after ingesting it, but then, I've been free of my allergens for long enough now, that I have no idea how I would reaction to a contaminant. The fact that we have regularly drunk OJ in this form, is what tends to make me thing, due to the distillation process, that this is not going to be a problem.

When you say "distillation", are you referring to the vacuum evaporation process usually used to make frozen juice concentrates? If so, I don't understand why you feel that would remove any contaminates, (such as gluten), from the product. That process only removes the liquids which become volatile at the reduced pressure, (mostly water).

Nope, was just referring to something I read of what these two companies said as a disclaimer -- something about the distillation set-up that the companies who make the additives use. I would think they use it for the purification of the product, but I have no way to interpret the statement. I don't think those two companies want to assume anything, so they are just punting back to the suppliers of these forfications.

I think, in the end, the situation will be just like with any other distillation product where the grain proteins, etc., don't make it, say, into the alcohol product in the distillate.

I suppose their suppliers will have to go on record that their products are gluten free before these two companies will be willing to make the same assertion. Where have we seen THIS before? Ha!
