Bone Density Test Results were sure surprising!

Post by grannyh »

A little over a week ago I went for my annual bone density test. The girl who does the test asked if I was still taking Miacalcin. I said NO.. I stopped it after 2+ years of continuing bone loss. She asked if I was taking the fosamax with D that the doctor had recommended.. I said NO.. it gave me indigestion. Well you are AT LEAST taking calcium supplements aren't you. I said NO.. extra calcium interfers with the effectiveness of anti cholesterol meds. She was thouroughly disgusted with me for not taking care of my health!

Family doctor called me Friday night with the test results. I said I expected the worst since I had had bone loss for 3 years.. He said.. wait a minute there are two sets of numbers.. the base line (2002) and last year's test (2005). He said I had a 3.9% improvement over last year!!! He knew I was not taking the fosamax or the miacalcin..but he too asked if i was taking extra calcium.. I said no and he agreed it does interfer with Crestor (or any cholesterol lowering drug).

Hmmmmm was his analysis... you are doing NOTHING that is recommended to improve bone density and you have finally improved after dropping all of the recommendations! Ummmmm, was my reply.. shall I just keep doing whatever I am doing????LOL He said looks like the best answer:)

Grannyh,

Hahahahahahaha. Good for you. That's showin' 'em how to do it.

I have a hunch, this is connected with the research that Polly cited, regarding osteoporosis. You're probably eating better these days, and/or your body is better able to utilize the calcium in your diet, now that your digestive system is working better. The malabsorption that comes with uncontrolled MC can cause all sorts of problems that are eliminated once the MC symptoms are brought under control.

I ain't no doctor, but 3.9% sounds to me like a pretty significant inprovement for one year.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hey there,

That's great news! Were you doing all these bone densities on the same machine, at the same place?

Yep, you are probably absorbing well now, and if your diet is adequate, perhaps that's the reason.

I wonder if perhaps the osteoporosis isn't secondary to the malabsorption rather than an autoimmune disease of it's own right?

I'll bet that Alice will find this VERRRY interesting! Perhaps this is why the celiacs' bones seem to reverse after treatment with diet -- because they've started to absorb nutrients.

I'm still not totally convinced that that applies to us, though as I think those may have been the more classic young diagnosed people. Also, that's the ONLY study on that that I'm familiar with.

Are you still exercising, particularly weight bearing, including walking?

Have you been outdoors much? I know that you've done lots of yard work in recent years. Perhaps the Vit D3 from the sun is helping.

You are good at timing things, so how do you think these things correlate with your bone testings history and your relevant meds?

You don't suppose your cholesterol lowering meds could've had anything to do with it, do you? Remember how one of them stopped your diarrhea a while back. Just trying to throw out a few possibilities.

We'll take it, regardless of what's helping. I'm so lousy at taking calcium anyway that i'm going to wake up dead one of these days, I'm sure, for lack of it.

Keep up the good ???.
Yours, Luce

Hi Luce and Grannyh,

Yes - very interesting! Congratulations on your improvement. I'm envious!

Luce, did you notice my latest bone density numbers that I posted awhile ago? My hip improved a little, but my spine didn't. :???: I'm still in the osteopenic range. I've had continual improvement for the past 5 years on various meds.

I personally think the calcium supplements I take don't do much good, but of course have nothing to prove it. I take D also, will have to check the dosage.

The only bones I've broken have been in the past 5 years - toes and foot.
Don't know if that's significant or not.

I eat tons of broccoli - sorry to hear that it may be lower in calcium than
we think.

Love,
Alice

All of my bone density tests have been done at the same place by the same person.

I have been going to the gym since before I got collagenous colitis so that routine never changed since 2002 either.

The only explanation can be that nutrients are now being absorbed from food. I started entocort last november and it took it a couple of weeks to work. I haven't had to take entocort again (yet) since the steroid OD in may seems to have caused a remission...

I am a bit worried about my bones as I'm now without estrogen (at least normal 34 year old amounts) and the gluten sensitivity, but the insurance "rule" is they won't pay for a bone density test until 2 years after the start of the increased risk factor. My GP agrees that that will be next year as this time last year I'd started on Lupron. I'll try to be good in the mean time.

Has your doctor tried to file for an exception with your insurance company? Sometimes that works..

Hi Granny. My bone density had improved on the one before & I am on calcium booster. Also take cholesterol reduction meds. Cholesterol is slowly reducing but not sure if this is because of meds or diet. Probably a combination of both. Only problem is spine has degenerated more. Have been off cortisone for some time now so maybe it is a general improvement because of this.

Love
