Food in the news AGAIN! Ketchup at McD's

Post by Lucy »

Hi all,

Did anyone but me hear on the news today that Heinz has lost it's contract with McD's burger chain? Hope I was hearing things!

Think they said it had something to do with their supply during the tomato shortage a while back, or something like that.

Sure do hope that McD's will get a company that celiacs who like ketchup on their burgers will be able to use, or people with any other kind of food allergen to avoid, for that matter.

Stay tuned. Hopefully, an update on this will be forthcoming. Perhaps someone should write to McD's and beg them to keep their ketchup contract gf.

Yours, Luce

Hi Luce. I just googled "McDonalds Heinz" and found this article: http://www.cattlenetwork.com/content.as ... ntid=48295 .

The bottom line is that apparently Heinz has been locked out of most, but not all, McDonalds for a long time. As you said, it was because of the tomato shortage a long time ago when Heinz gave preference to its "bottle" customers over McDonalds. Since then, several countries (including Spain, Tessa) have gone back to using Heinz. And there are some franchise operations in the USA that have elected to use Heinz. But I suspect that most McDonalds are still using McDonalds "house brand" which is made by several different private label companies.

Having said all that, McDonalds' website ( http://www.mcdonalds.com/usa/eat/nutrit ... rgens.html ) clearly indicates that their catsup (or as they spell it, ketchup) is gluten free. So enjoy those burgers!

Hi Carole,

Thanks for the links.
The last reaction I had to anything was back in Kerrville where I had a bunless burger and fries out of desparation -- they roll up the sidewalk after lunch, and we weren't prepared for that.
Think it was contamination from poor handling, etc.

This was way back in the fall of 2005, and it was the first reaction I'd had in a very long time, but it didn't last very long at all, and didn't disturb our vacation. The restaurants in the Hill Country towns we'd just left HUNGRY sure did mess things up. I should've known they wouldn't be open all day -- DAH, but since they have so many tourists, you'd think they'd find a way to remain open! I guess that some things are more important than $$$ -- like FOOD for instance! Ha!

Wow, if I were McD's I'd sure work hard to get my 11 percent share back of that market! Wow, what a hit!

Thanks again.

Yep, our fast food days were over and done with a long time ago, except for cokes and the handicapped bathroom.

This spring, on our way to Dallas, we brought our cold drinks to the car, and ate out of the Igloo cooler, but then it was cool. During the evacuation, we couldn't very well have done that, due to the extreme weather outdoors. We only travel under duress during the summer, so hopefully we'll not be caught in that situation again, but I'm afraid we will.

This makes us almost have to eat inside a restaurant or else use up all the gas keeping Mom cool while we eat.

I suppose we could try to carry our Igloo contents discretely inside to have with our cokes, but would feel pretty silly doing that.

Safest bet for us if caught without food out in the boonies is to stop at a Wendy's and just get a baked potato and split a dairy free (cheeseless) small chili cup to use as both a little dinner salad dressing as well as to flavor our plain baked potato -- not bad, and less chance of risk. I like to ask them to please not open our potatoes so that that doesn't create potential for contamination.

Last visited a Wendy's in route home from Dallas this last spring, and we did it the above way among the three of us in order to not have to go to the health food store in Dallas.

Problem is with Wendy's, sometimes all ya find in the more remote areas is McD's sometimes.

Maybe next time, I'll see a Walmart, so I can run in and get a bagged salad, and throw some canned meat on it, etc. Not organic, but this is a rare occurrence, since I usually only go on a long trip, maybe once a year, if I'm lucky.
Hey, why didn't I think of that before -- quick and easy, and can get a cold coke at a grocery store or drugstore most anywhere to drink. Not sure about how the public would leave the bathrooms, however.

Anyway, I'm glad that I'm homebound when it comes to eating -- too many land mines out there, and wouldn't be doing fast food on purpose anyway, anytime! That's strictly for emergencies for us.

However, I think it's helpful to bring up these "heads up" notices, just in case some newbies are still learning the gf part of the diet, and in the habit of eating there anyway.

At least knowing what is supposed to be gf will give them a period of improvement on their way to getting better and better diets in general.

Also, I think it's an object lesson in how what's current one day, may not be true the next, and how this is an ongoing learning experience in which we have to be ever vigilent about what we eat.

It's just too difficult for many people to change their habits over night, so the gentler we are on them, especially right at first, the better.

However, I think that if one's already eating healthier to begin with, and more "from scratch." that makes it tons easier to adapt to the necessary changes that we have to make to get better.

What we need is a healthy fast food chain!

Yours, Luce
