I'm curious. What causes nausea?
I don't mean all the different things that can cause it, but I mean what is the physical mechanism by which we....er...uh.....vomit? Or at least feel "seasick."

HI Sally,
Here is what I found on the web re: what causes nausea.
Nausea and vomiting are controlled by the central nervous system. Nausea is controlled by a part of the nervous system that controls involuntary bodily functions. Vomiting is a reflex controlled by a vomiting center in the brain. Vomiting can be stimulated by various triggers, such as smell, taste, mental upset, pain, motion, changes in the body caused by inflammation, poor blood flow, or irritation.
Anticipatory nausea and vomiting occur before treatment as a response to other triggers in the environment (such as, certain objects, odors, or tastes).
Makes sense to me and the one thing I hate more than anything is to vomit and smells mostly do it for me.
Love, Maggie

Hi Sally,
As you are aware, nausea can be caused by a list of things as long as your arm. Basically, nausea is the sensation of having an urge to vomit. Vomiting is the act of forcing the contents of the stomach up through the esophagus and out of the mouth.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency ... 003117.htm
Incidentally, note that MC is not included in the list of reasons why vomiting occurs, on this site, (though it does list food allergies--remember, though, that most GIs deny that MC is diet connected). I get the impression that nausea and vomiting are not considered to be classic symptoms of MC. In fact, I'll bet that most GI docs would deny that it's connected, (just as most of them deny that abdominal pain is often connected with MC).

P S Wow Maggie! You're fast on the draw.

The article doesn't go into detail about this, but the reason for the increased salivation is almost surely to help minimize the risk of stomach acid burns to the esophogus and mouth. The quote is from:Vomiting is a forceful action accomplished by a fierce, downward contraction of the diaphragm. At the same time, the abdominal muscles tighten against a relaxed stomach with an open sphincter. The contents of the stomach are propelled up and out.
You may have more saliva just before vomiting.
Vomiting is a complex, coordinated reflex orchestrated by the vomiting center of the brain. It responds to signals coming from:
* The mouth, stomach, and intestines
* The bloodstream, which may contain medicines or infections
* The balancing systems in the ear (motion sickness)
* The brain itself, including unsettling sights, smells, or thoughts

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Sally
I feel that all the answers given are pretty accurated, but I hope you accept a brief adding to them.
In my opinion, if most GI docs deny that nausea and vomiting, as well as abdominal pain are connected with MC, I think these docs could be wrong. Not that I have the truth. I am sure this would have to be studied, but above all the symptoms I suffered of MC, what I had most were nausea vomits and abdominal pain. In fact, I have been seriously sick because of it and had to be taken into hospital a few years ago.
If these were caused by gluten intolerance, I don´t know.
The true is I am much better since I´ve started the diet.
Wayne, what about a poll about symptoms we had before our diagnosis?
Love,
Tessa

Thanks, everybody. I have decided that there is no excuse for ignorance at my age. If I have what seems to be a silly (to me) question, I will ask it. After all, there is no such thing.
I think we did a survey of symptoms once before, but I would like to see a simpler poll. Just check it off if you had it. Of course, the poll would be as long as my arm. I'll think about it.
Love, Sally

Hi Sally,
I don't know what causes it...but I know I hate it. I was constipated my whole life before MC and never had it. The great 9 days I had before this last flare were the only days since last nov that I didn't have it for at least part of the day. I don't know if that's normal for MC and it is also listed as a symptom of hyperthroidism.....so maybe I'm getting it so bad because it is coming from 2 causes. If it doesn't go away after I start my throid medication I'm going to look into some medication to help with it.
Love,
Cristi
