Morning Barbara,

If I recall correctly, along about the beginning of the fall season is when some MCers sometimes have increased problems of that sort, but I see no reason why it cannot happen any time that your body is reacting to histamines. Here's how I believe it happens:

The body has built in self-defense mechanisms that it uses to protect vital organs at times when it feels that it is in danger of attack. Many chemical reactions occur, the most well known of which is the release of adrenalin. At times like that, in order to protect the gut wall from possible damage by the contents of the lumen, the brain activates mast cells in the gut which release histamines. The histamines prompt the enteric nervous system, (the nervous system that controls the digestive system, sometimes known as the second brain), to get rid of waste material, by means of diarrhea.

Therefore, anytime that histamines are present in the gut, you can have diarrhea, as a result. An allergic response to pollen, and other allergens, causes the release of histamines, which may be why some MCers have increased problems in the fall. This can also happen in the spring, of course.

Stress can cause the body to produce histamines, so that anytime your body feels stressed, diarrhea can be the result. When we're having allergic reactions, we will have itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, bronchial congestion, etc. After a day of this, when we wake up the next morning, all the bad stuff has collected during the night, and our eyelids may have a lot of gooey stuff in them, our nose will be full of "stuff", we will need to cough up a lot of crud from our bronchial tubes, etc. After we clear all this out, we feel pretty good for a while, until it starts over, as the atmosphere heats up, and the pollen starts to be released into the air again.

By the same token, if there are histamines in the gut, we will feel an urgent need to clear that out, first thing in the morning, also. If stress is the trigger, I think that it's possible to have histamines in the gut, without necessarily having a noticeable respiratory reaction. This is just my opinion, though, so I could be all wet.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

No, Wayne, you sound pretty dry (if disgusting) to me.

Miss BN, I seem to be having the same problem you are although maybe not as urgent. No goo in my eyes or crud in my bronchial tubes, but I have noticed an increase in both frequency and looseness in my poo. First thing in the morning and then nothing.

Wayne's explanation makes sense especially since where I live is the allergy capitol of the nation, I swear.

Love and namaste,
