I Have been Bad

Post by annie oakley »

Well yesterday I bought a Gal of Blue Bell No Sugar Buttered Pecan Ice Cream.....Bad Mistake with me. :mallet: I have been eating Frozen Blueberries, Dark sweet cherries, and Raspberries and Blackberries because they are better for me than  the Ice cream. Besides they antioxident and good for your stomach. Wellllllll.......I had some yesterday, small bowl....today I got into it and Mike helped me and together we finished the whole Gallon off.....about 1/2 each. So very bad of me :yikes: I haven't had Ice cream in awhile. Soooooo we shall see what happens. I have been with out meds with Norman sticking right close since the middle of March, hope he doesn't desert me now :banned: NO MORE ICE CREAM even if Norman stays here. I guess I will have to Have talk with myself.

Oma,

If dairy is the problem for you, if you don't eat any of it while those antibodies are present, you just might not see a reaction.

I don't know how long casein antibodies stick around in the body, but I'm sure it's nothing like the gluten antibodies which can last for months and months and months after one ingestion.

Besides, the stuff seems to be in the air, almost, so we're constantly bombarded with at least a tiny bit, I guess.

My hunch is that you'll be ok as long as you stay away from whichever of the allergens in the ice cream that you react to.

By the way, I've always wondered if Blue Bell had any gluten in it...well..does it, anybody?

Oma, I wonder just how many people in this group are familiar with Blue Bell, besides grannyh, tex, brenda, myself, and a few others who've lived in Texas, of course.

It's made in Brenham, Tx., near some beautiful rolling farm land on the highway that runs from Houston to Austin. Brenham is about a third of the way there, I'd roughly estimate.

I used to like the peach, but right now, I'd settle for a good organic peach all by itself -- tastes can change, Oma.

If you have a sweet tooth, maybe you could spend what you'd normally spend on foods with offenders in them on organic fruits.
Check out your frozen fruit section if you can't find any in season, and even canned fruits and vegetables are starting to become available in organic now, if you use canned foods at times.

Do you have many organic farms near where you are, Oma? If not, what about health food stores?

I find that I actually save money when I eat this kind of stuff rather than some gf type dessert, and I stay satisfied longer without cravings. If I don't eat as much, then it doesn't cost as much. Besides, all the bioflavinoids are so good for us!

I don't buy many of any one thing like this from produce for fear of spoilage and waste, but do try to get the things that appear to be at their peak of the season when they're available fresh.

Frozen at peak is another great source, and that's becoming more available in organic all the time, I notice.

Oma, I'll bet your hubby would enjoy a good smoothie as well or better than ice cream.

You could use a banana for the "creamy" part, and throw in the fruit and fruit juice? You might want to try it with some frozen bananas or else make the fruit the frozen part. I use organic apple juice that comes in a glass jar with no additives -- just enough to help liquify and sweeten the smoothie.

If dried coconut flakes don't bother you (sulfites), and you can be assured that the ones you are getting haven't been covered in wheat flour, you might enjoy throwing in a handful of unsweetened coconut flakes.

This will make the texture like coconut, but the nutty flavor will come from whichever nut butter you choose to throw in. It's puzzling to people who drink it without knowing why it tastes different than if it were entirely coconut.

If you've got some smooth nut butter that you like, you could throw a couple of gobs of that into a two banana smoothie with a small bag of fruit, like organic blueberries, and it will mix up nicely in your blender.

That way, you'll get some protein with it, and it shouldn't contribute to diverticular problems since the nuts are in butter form.

I've done this so far with almond butter and macadamia nut butter, and they come out different from each other, but delicious. Experiment until you find the combination that you like.

If it was as hot there as it was here this weekend, I can see how you could do that! My vice is popsicles. I ate way more than I care to think about this weekend. But given the heat and humidity levels we had, it was a good way to stay cool (not to mention hot tubs w/o the heat on!).

Hope you aren't feeling any ill effects except for the guilt. Been there, done that! My stress meal before I went gf was a pint of Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream and a can of Pringles! Odd combo, but soothing  .

Luce,

Actually, youl can buy Blue Bell Ice Cream as far north as parts of Kansas, Missouri, and Kentucky, east to the Carolinas, and west to Arizona. Here's a distrtibution map.

http://www.bluebell.com/folksask03.htm

They don't have a GF flavors list on their website, but if you call them, they'll be happy to send you a list of GF flavors. Most of their flavors are GF. The ones that aren't are generally the various "cookie" and "cake" flavors.

P S When I was just a little tyke, my great grandmother had a dairy, and supplied them with milk. They even used a picture of some of her cows in their ads, for many years. I used to love to visit her farm, because the red sandy land, and the moss-covered spanish oaks, were something that we didn't have at home. It was the place where I saw my first doodlebug, and I used to love to "fish" for them.

Oma, I did the same thing the other night. I ate a whote pint of Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream. Once I got the spoon into it I just couldn't seem to stop. I shouldn't do that because it's so full of FAT. I can understand how you and Mike got carried away. I'll forgive you if you forgive me.

I sure hope you didn't have any bad after effects. I didn't besides just feeling a bit like a beached whale. How are you?

But every once in a while after being good for a long time, you just have to sin.

Lots of love,

I just bought a half gallon of butterscotch blast (vanilla with caramel swirl and bits of butterscotch) - made by Hood.
I've been nursing my headache all day with it!

HI Wayne,

I had no idea where all Blue Bell was available! Looks like New Mexico got passed over. Guess I don't have to worry about THAT anymore, now, since I have reactions to dairy and eggs!

I'm hoping to be able to spend more time in NM in a few years, but I never did eat all that much ice cream, so I'd have survived there, I guess. Now, it's a mute point.

Hopefully, I'll be able to find bananas, frozen organic strawberries, etc., as it's a furrr piece to the state line!

Hmm, wonder what else I'd have a hard time finding over there? It's a pretty isolated place, in a way.

I trust that your great grandmother lived near Brenham, Wayne, is that correct?

I used to leave one of the farming communities near there on my visits before daylight on Sunday mornings, and enjoyed watching the farmers out in the barns at that early hour. Think they carried lanterns to see, and that way, I could tell where they were.

Think they must've been feeding their animals, and possibly milking the cows.

Do you remember what towns were close to her farm?

Well Today the joints ache and a mild headache...I can live with that....I still have Norman. And I normally eat frozen fruit and make fruit smothies without dairy all the time.....til Buck ate part of the blender (don't ask) and I need to buy a new one.
Thanks for the web site Tex, I will check it out.
And Sally I forgave you before you said it. I think now and then we just lose control (no pun intended) and have to gorge. I have been lucky so far.
But I am curious regarding Texs Blue bell site and am going there to check it out. Love Oma

Luce,

The farm was between Brenham and Houston. If I recall correctly, Houston's expansion took it over way back in the late '50s, when someone from there offered her waaaaaaaaaay too much to continue to hold on to it.

Sorry, I always go into shock when I read a post like this. Perhaps I am just dense. Haha ha perhaps you say ??

Just as a start , if I was to eat even a spoonful of dairy or have something cooked on a grill that wheat buns had been warmed on , eat something from a pan that had soy cooked in it that was not thoroughly clean, or eat lots of sugar , within twenty four hours i would be incapacitated by D. Not what I wanted out of life or want now !!!!! I am always amazed at how you seem to joke about it and anticipate the consequences. With a very relaxed attention to a simple diet I can joyously start the day at 4:30, have a quick breakfast and in the cool of the morning bicycle 25 miles before starting my day in the shop at 8:00 AM where I have slowly reconstructed the work i wanted to do before MC interrupted it . By giving up so little I have gained so much and have never felt more alive despite the 103 degree heat we have recently had later in the day.

It has taken a long, long time to discover how to truly enjoy living and eating all over again. I know we are all different but if you know something doesn't work why not go for the positive instead of tempting fate and losing out on the best part of your life sitting in agony on the toilet.

Surely I have missed something. Be so kind as to start another thread and help me learn.

To your continued recovery

Oma,

By the way, did the dog ever happen to eat your homework when you were a kid?

Sorry, just couldn't resist THAT temptation. At least it won't give me D! Haha!
