Tubing and Lomotil

Post by Polly »

Happy Monday Morning!

Yesterday I went tubing down our nearby river, the Gunpowder, with Scott and my niece's little girl and her friend (10 year olds). It was not a very hot day here (high of less than 80), and the water was COLD! But it was lots of fun - we had rain the night before so the water was moving right along and there were lots of little "rapids", which delighted the kiddies.

Stopped at a little island in the river and had a picnic lunch. We taught the girls how to skip stones on the water's surface. I had bought them one of those cheap, waterproof, disposable cameras, so they had fun with that. Also, there is a rope swing along the river where the water is deep.

Can you tell that I am determined to show kids something other than their usual diet of computers, iPods, etc.? LOL! Anyway, I thought you'd get a kick out of knowing that, before I left, I popped a Lomotil. Yep, even though I am in longterm remission, those old fears refuse to go away. Once one has had uncontrollable D it may be impossible to ever stop worrying about those awful, embarrassing accidents. What do you think?

Love,

Polly

Polly,

Good for you. You made me feel guilty, since all I did yesterday was lounge around most of the day, visit with a few friends, and fiddle with a computer. LOL.

You're right. The outdoors and the wonders of nature are one of the few things that can fascinate youngsters more than electronic gadgets, and it's one of the few things that they never seem to get enough of.

Maybe I'm atypical, but I don't worry about D anymore, and haven't for I suppose at least a year or more. However, I only had the uncrollable type for a couple of years, and the second year it was just on an occaasional basis, since I was on the diet. I had a big advantage though, in that I didn't have to be out in public every day, so I only had one really bad incident in a public place, plus a couple of minor ones. The bad one was a doozie though, LOL, and is just as vivid in my memory as the day it happened. Those were not the good old days.

Tubing. I read that and my first thought was NOT rafting on the river!! I wondered if you had found a new way to ingest Lomotil. HAHAHAHA!!!!

I am glad you had such a good time out in the bushes and the water. Not only is it good for kiddies, it is very good for grownups!!!

I have been sitting inside looking at Mother Nature through the window. It is too hot to do anything outside. Over 100 degrees. When it gets over 85 I start to wilt.

OK, here's a question: Does anybody else get the runs or at least the urge to run when they are out in the heat?

Tex,

You said "I only had the uncrollable type for a couple of years, and the second year it was just on an occaasional basis"

My mouth dropped open.......I would be so paranoid if that had been me!!
I know others have had uncontrollable D for that long also, but I only put up with it for a couple of months and I cannot imagine having that problem for that long.

I tip my hat to you and the others who put up with it for so long.

Sally,

I'm a wilter too. And lately I think the heat has been giving my tummy troubles a bit. Don't know why though.

Yesterday we had a front move in and the breeze was actually a bit chilly...it was about 70 degrees out and I felt cold! First time all summer. I was concened at first I had developed a fever because I had the chills. Turns out all I needed was blanket!

Polly, I'm jealous! That sounds like so much fun. We haven't even had a chance to do much canoeing...its either too hot, or raining this summer. Hopefully next weekend. Kayla has been asking to go and if its warm enough we like to pull up on a sand bar and swim mid trip.

Dear Sally,
No, the heat doesn't have that effect, just various foods.

Polly, I know what you mean. I pop Caltrate if I'm going to be away from home. I might get so constipated that it's painful, but it's way better than having to stop everyone's fun to find me a bathroom. They all think I'm such a hypochondriac anyway, I don't need to call any more attention to myself.

My husband is so good about getting me to a toilet, by the way. If I tell him I need to find one, he panics just about as much as I do.

Yep, heat indeed doesn't make me feel very well. Which is strange cause I grew up in Salem, where it's usally about 10 degrees warmer there than it is here in Seattle. We're having a bit of a heat wave here as well. They keep saying it's going to end, but it just keeps going. Ugg! Go away.

I'm having a very hard time sleeping and it's making me pretty ill. :(

Shirley,

I didn't mean continuously--sorry if I misled you. The episodes rarely lasted longer than about two weeks, and often only about a week to ten days. And, I usually only had 6 or 7 BMs per day. I soon discovered that if I stopped eating for a few days, (I was often forced to stop, because of the nausea and vomoting), the D would eventually stop, and then I would get a break for a few days, before it started over again. LOL. The second year was mostly good days, and usually a couple of good weeks, (sometiomes three), would pass before I had another round. I've always found it to be fairly easy to put things like that behind me, and move on.

Oh, ugh, Mike. Salem. If there is going to be nasty muggy weather in Oregon that's where it is. I live in Wilsonville which is about 1/2 hour north of Salem and it is much drier here. Thank goodness.

I want it to go away, too. How does a nice gentle rain sound?

Yeah, the air getting trapped there in the valley makes it pretty bad. :(

Sounds like you had a great weekend Polly! I love tubing too, use to do it quite a bit years ago on a river in MN. Nothing like a nice, leisurely tube down a lazy river with a cooler full of cold drinks...ahhh.

I also use lomotil on occasion- always take it with me on trips "just in case". Maybe for some of us, that fear will never goes away no matter how well we feel because we are often riding an edge.

I needed to take it a few days last week while in MN. My stools started softening up and within 3 days were watery and the food was undigested. I suspect the volumes of fresh fruits and vegetables I was eating and/or possibly a combination of the hot weather too. Also, ate out a few times and was drinking cold drinks which I generally avoid. I toned down my fruit/vegie consumption and that seemed to help but my system hasn't returned to normal yet. Hoping it will soon.

Joanna,

Hmmmmmmmm. It sure sounds like you might have accidentally eaten some gluten when you were eating out.

I love tubing Sally. I'm so glad you had so much fun. I have been in remission without meds since March of this year. I have a bunch of Asacol if anyone needs it.
Sally....No the heat doesn't bother me like that. Going thru the second menopause makes it's own heat lately.

Polly,
Sounds like fun! Larry and I tubed in West Virginia right before the MC showed its ugly head! We had a BLAST!

I used to get so upset with my kids when they complained there was nothing to do.............no imagination in this generation. We spend a lot of time with the grandkids teaching them about nature, animals and how to use their imagination to make up things to do. I tought Bryce how to find things in clouds and a swirled ceiling when he was first learning to talk. He still has fun with that!

Marsha,
You are NOT a hypochondriac! I felt I was for such a long time and still feel that way at times. I'm sure the nurses at my docs office think I am! Frustrating isn't it!?

My husband panics when I tell him I need a bathroom too!

Love,
