Carrageenan and Bacteroides Vulgatus

Post by mle_ii »

I remember some folks here reacting to carrageenan. Well, I was reading some information about colitis and I came across this info under Ulcerative Colitis.
Levels of Bacteroides Vulgatus six times as high as normal levels (Murray and Pizzorno, 1999, p.1340). Bacteroides Vulgatus and carrageenan are combined in laboratory animals to produce ulcerative colitis. This suggests that carrageenan, an additive found in ice-cream, and other processed foods, may exacerbate the disease.

Bryers doesnt have carrageenan. Yes it is true about inducing UC in rats using that additive... I have avoided it for about 1 year now and that is why I am having such a hard time finding a milk sibstitue that is GFCF and doesnt have carrageenan... if you can find one you are my hero.
Dr Fine test shows positive for gluten and casien but negative for soy, eggs, and yeast
Maybe its UC maybe its MC? Who knows at this point, but at least I know my intollerances now... so heres to the road to healing!

Speaking of that, did you see this site?

There was a lot of interesting research involved in this project, regarding gut environments favorable to the development of colitis. Even if bacteria are not the direct cause of colitis, apparently certain types have to be present, before colitis can be initiated. Rather interesting.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks for this info, Mike.

I am intolerant of carrageenan and have never found a safe dairy substitute. But I still check every time I go grocery shopping! I'll let you know if I ever see one.

You know, there are recipes for making your own nut milk. Let me know if you would like me to post them.

Love,

Polly
