I'm off to the beach by myself today to rescue two cats. When we were at MIL's last week there were 2 lovely, friendly stray cats hanging around. Of course, I fed them (they were starving) even though MIL said not to. Before we left I had made umpteen phone calls to try to find a place for them.....without luck. I told MIL that I would continue my efforts from home and asked her if she would feed them for a few days until I could be successful. She refused, so I enlisted a neighbor friend to feed them for me.
Anyway, after innumerable more calls, yesterday I found a cat sanctuary about an hour from the beach that will take both cats! I was ecstatic!!! It is a no-kill shelter on 15 acres with a very successful adoption program. So, off I go for a 7 hour round trip on a rescue mission. Wish me luck!
The only down side is that I will have to spend the night tonight with MIL. I'll be taking the cats to the shelter tomorrow morning.
Moral of this story - persistence pays off!

P.S. I think the cats are both "teenagers" - maybe 4-5 months old. One is a talkative female tortoise, the other an orange tabby male. Both beautiful and sweet.

You are a felineitarian extraordinaire. Not many people would be willing to spend that much time battling traffic, the elements, and a belligerent mother-in-law, to rescue two stray cats. You are one dedicated lady.

I had some time to kill the other day and visited the animal shelter. I left feeling so sad and helpless because I couldn't take in any of the pets. There were so many!
I tell people that they should adopt from the shelter any time I get an opportunity. They spay/neuter, give first shots, vet check. license and give a basic training/command video for the adoption fee.

Our new kitty was a stray who turned up at our neighbor's house in February, starving and pregnant. She already had 3 cats but kept this one 'til the kittens were born and adopted. Then another neighbor took the cat, had her spayed, and gave her to her Mom for a present. Guess what? Mom didn't want a cat! So we took her. Free, spayed, came with a litter box and bag of food. Couldn't be better. She is a brown tabby and is very sweet, playful, friendly.

Friendly cats like that really do need good homes. Thanks Polly. My Jessie is one of those kind. I tried taking her to the shelter, but there was no room at the inn when we figured out she was living in our garage. So my house became her shelter and she is very happy. Not as snuggly in this warm weather, but a total lap cat when its cooler out.
Mission accomplished. It was very sad leaving the cats at the shelter because they are so special. They will try to adopt them together and will ask the adoptive family if it is OK for me to contact them to hear how they are doing. Thanks for all of your good wishes. I really believe that the measure of a society is how it treats its most vulnerable living beings.....animals as well as people.

I agree totally with your last comment. I have not accomplished much in my 47 years on this earth but I'd like to think that I am a decent person as evidenced by my actions.
