whole foods fish market
Hi Friends,
I can't believe this...maybe this isn't news to you guys...but I was at whole foods buying fresh fish when I noticed that they had sandwiches 4 inches away in the open display case with a 4 in. tall plastic divider between them and the fish. The display had lettuce lining the bottom with unwrapped sandwich rolls scattered around and on top of that was the wrapped sandwiches. So I asked the fish guy about it explaining that I had celiac disease and that this contamination could really make me sick. He said that that was just a small way that fish there could become gluten contaminated as they make sandwiches at the raw fish area all the time and also make crab cakes there with bread crumbs. He said there would be no way to garantee that any of the fish there hadn't accidently been contaminated.
So, I asked what could be done and he said I need to come in and ask the handler to put on clean gloves and go into the back as they have fresh fish there that would not have been exposed to any bread products.
This just blew my mind...everytime I think I have this figured out, I find another way I can get glutened. I just wanted to pass this on.
Love,
Cristi

Hi Cristi,
That's really disappointing, but I guess it doesn't surprise me. Whole foods started with their first store, just down the road from me, many years ago, and all along, their expansion has been driven by the "organic" movement, rather than a concern about allergies and/or intolerances.
The first time I visited their store, (I guess that was way back in the 60's), was the last time, because I didn't like the way that people were using the same scoop in several bulk bins, and dribbling contents of one bin into the others. And, heck, I didn't even have any food intolerances back then--I just didn't consider it to be a good practice.
Maybe I'm looking at this wrong, but making sandwiches in the raw fish area is not only risky for fish customers with intolerances, but it's also a health risk for people who buy sandwiches there.
Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Luce,
You're probably right. On the other hand, the people buying the sandwiches are outa luck, since it's not practical to wash a sandwich. LOL.
