Which cereals are ok to eat?
I saw some puffed rice at the store, no malt. I assume this is ok. Right?
Any other cereals ok?
Thanks,
Mike

Rice is generally ok, and "unadultrated" puffed rice can usually be found in HF stores, along with things like quinoa, millet, and sometimes amaranth, and even more exotic grains. Don't fall for spelt, though--that ancient grain is not gluten free.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Also,
Watch out for cereals that'll say "Amaranth" or something safe like that on the front, then ya read it's a mixture of grains in the ingredients, some of which are off limits.
Yep, HF stores carry lots of gf cereals. Problem is which substitute milks to use as so many seem to cause people problems, we've discovered more recently, that is unless you make it yourself.
What I resorted to was just getting the Envirokids Peanut Butter Rice bars that come in boxes of 6. Gets old after a while, but they're really not bad at all, just a bit sweet. Guess you could just leave out the substitute milks if you wanted.
Mike, watch out for the name brands.
HF stores carry a brand of corn puffs that say "Gluten Free" right on the front, right across the right hand corner. Also this same brand carries rice cereals that are gf. All their gf products are labeled GF on the front, same as the corn puffs, and corn puffs come in a few different flavors.
Mesa Sunrise is a great tasting flake cereal for something a little different. May be my favorite cold cereal, gf or not,
Think I mentioned that I like Twice Rice once before, and there's another one that I think is less sweet than Twice Rice that you might like. Polly likes that one, so perhaps she'll post here to give the name of it -- comes in a bit smaller box.
Another option would be to look for the hot rice cereal at an Asian store that makes a hot cereal that closely resembles oat meal in consistency -- puffy. If I had time to visit one of our Asian markets around here, I'd get some of that and experiment with making some baked items that would normally use oatmeal. Hmm, wonder if I could use it in meatloaf as I used to use oatmeal in my meatloaf in pre-gf days?? Wish I could think of what that puffy rice product is called. Wow, sorry, but I just got to thinking to myself.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding good gf cereals. Alot depends on what you like. If you don't particularly like sweetened things, you're choices will be more limited. Cereals marketed to the kiddies will always be sweeter, btw.

I'm sorry I can't remember if you are avoiding more than gluten and dairy (I think thats right), but I like the EnviroKids Koala Crisps (like Cocoa Crispies, but gf) and a little sweet, but EnviroKids Panda Puffs are pretty good too...they are peanut butter flavored. EnviroKids also have gf corn pops (Gorllia something I think) but I've never been a big fan of corn pops or flakes unless I poured tons of sugar on them so I haven't tried them.

Mike, When I was at my absolute worst, earlier this year, I had to stop taking the medicine Questran (I'd become almost anorexic - a rare side effect). I'd been taking Questran because it has lots of soluble fiber and this helps to bind the stools. At the time I decided to substitute Cream of Rice. And guess what? I went into remission and have not had D since then. Maybe it was just a coincidence - I'll never know. Anyway, Cream of Rice is gluten free, contains soluble fiber and is easy to digest. It might be worth a try.

Mike,
My favorite has been Health Valley's Rice Crunchers. They're a lot like rice chex, fewer ingredients tho, and no malt. they have a nice, grainy test, which I like. I think they're made with brown rice flour. Anyway, they taste good :) You could mix some with that tbsp of peanutbutter.

Gorilla MUNCH
That's the name you were looking for -- another Envirokids cereal. Their parent company is the one that also makes adult cereals, such as the Mesa Sunrise. You're fortunate to be able to eat all the different flavors -- lots of choices.
Hey, Carrie, that is SOOO interesting about the timing of your remission with the Cream of Rice. what do you add to it for taste?

I was just adding blueberries, but since I started eating honey I found that tastes great in it too. :)Lucy wrote:That's the name you were looking for -- another Envirokids cereal. Hi Mike!
The cereal Lucy referred to that I like is called "Nutty Rice" by Pacific Grains (health food store). It doesn't have any nuts - just crunchy little rice balls. I also like Cream of Rice. Have you tried Cream of Buckwheat? It's a hot cereal and is NOT a grain, BTW (it's in the rhubarb family). Since I can't do milk, I add either honey or pure maple syrup to the hot cereals and throw in some nuts or berries.
For additional veggie ideas, it seems that root veggies are often well- tolerated. I like to peel and boil a mixture of carrots, parsnips, turnips, rutabagas, and potatoes. Then I mash them with some salt and olive oil or chicken broth. They are filling, too.
I love squashes too. Have you tried spooning GF spaghetti sauce over spaghetti squash? YUM. Also, I avoid any artificial colors/flavors like the plague.
Glad you are feeling better. Keep in mind that the more your gut heals, the shorter a flare will be when you ingest some hidden gluten.
Love,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Nutty Hemp??
Isn't that the other one that same company makes or was it nutty something else?
Anyone tried the one I'm thinking of? If so, what's it like, and is it gf? I like the feeling of variety with all these weird cereals even if I don't like the taste? Haha!
