Cristi's Amazing update

Post by cludwig »

Hi Friends,

Somebody pinch me...I think I must be dreaming. Yesterday I had two completely unformed BMs. Yesterday morning I took One 3mg entocort (thought I would taper up to the 9mg dose). Well, this morning I passed fully formed normans....they were even slightly hard to pass...unbelievable!!!I had no heart racing at all this morning. I am over the moon. I just couldn't wait to share this with all of you.

So, I see no reason at this point to increase my dose...just keep it at 3mg per day and see how it goes. My husband is cautioning me that it is only one day. What do you all think?

Love,
Cristi

NO S---!? It's really hard to believe it would work that fast!! Thats the first real poop you have had in a long time Cristi. Must of felt terrific.

I don't have any advice on the dosage though. I started at 9mg and maintained that dosage until I started weaning off. Did your GI suggest building up to 9mg? Keep up the good work!

Joanna

Cool! Don't get discouraged if every day isn't as great as today initially, but it sure is a good start.

I wonder if it kicked in so fast because you were already on the road to recovery with diet. I'm no MD but my opinion of medication is that use the lowest dose that works.

Hope to keep hearing the good news from your neck of the woods!

Hi Joanna,

I can hardly believe it myself. It's the first real poop since my surgery last November. My GI didn't suggest tapering up...I just did that because of my history with meds...always seem to be overly sensitive. This doesn't make any sense to me but I will happily accept the results. I'll let you know if my good luck continues.

Thanks Katy,

It is a good start. I have to believe that the diet is the reason it is working so fast. I was on entocort in Feb/Mar, 9mg, but was consuming gluten at the time and after 6 weeks had improved to softly formed stools. So the diet has to be the difference. I must need the combo diet and meds to get my inflamation down. I am so happy but I know I have to take one day at a time. But this is a way cool day!

Cristi

 WooHoo! Great news!

I'm with Katy on the lowest dosage that works - why take more if you don't have to? But the same, I'm no doc.

Happy for you,
Peg

Cristi,

 :toast:

I agree with Katy and Peggy. Dosage rates for meds are determined by experimental tests with normal people, and the test results virtually always show a range, depending on individual reactions. The recommended dosage is usually a dose that works adequately for most people, without causing adverse symptoms in most people.

There is no reason to take more than is necessary to do the job, and taking a minimum dose minimizes the chances of your body ever building up a tolerance for the drug, so that larger doses would eventually be needed to show the same amount of relief that a smaller dose provided initially.

I think you are right, you were close to success, and the small dose of budesonide was all it took to "win the game". If the symptoms return, you can always increase the dosage, if you feel it is necessary. At least now you know that you have a combination that works.

It's a powerful feeling, isn't it. Kinda like the dawning of a new era in your life. I can remember when I finally realized that I had a winning combination that I could count on to eliminate my symptoms. I felt like shouting to anyone who would listen, "HEY, I'VE GOT MY LIFE BACK!"

Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks Everyone,

I think I agree with all of you...why take more unless my system tells me I need to. So, I"ll just wait and see. Feeling a little quesy this afternoon...I am sure that my system needs time to figure out what to do with normans. It is great to have this sign that things could be heading in a better direction. I'll keep you posted.

Cristi---great news-----BUT I want to add this------DONT fool around with regulating your meds.!!!

I did that once and it was a very BIG mistake!!!!

Cristi,

Way to go!!! (Is that another pun??)

Not exactly sure how it works with both diet and Entocort, but when the stools start to work their way back up to Normans (normal stools for you novices! Ha!) for dieters, it's sort of two steps forward to one step backwards along the way.

Know what you mean about feeling that your lower gut doesn't know what to do with the stool the first time. I remember being afraid that something would rip with the first that had any body to it.

All along the journey to all-the-time formed stools, I could feel those muscles relearning how to contract after all those years of laying around -- they were holding gym in there, I do believe -- really working up a sweat!

Sometimes stools would get to the end of their journey, and it just seemed as though they couldn't take that one last leap!

When you experience these things, you'll recognize what I'm talking about, so let us know your every gut feeling from here on out, complete with vivid descriptions of your poop! This is how we assess our abilities to help people, and it shows newbies what they have to look forward to.

Hey, the things we get excited about around here!

Congrats! Looks like it's going to work, but don't get discouraged with a backstep occasionally.

Yours, Luce
