Bald Eagle

Post by kate_ce1995 »

Well, I saw my first live and wild bald eagle in flight yesterday. My boss and I were out looking at a job site, which happens to be a slope failure along a river, and when we arrived a bald eagle was flying over the river. What a BIG and magestic bird.

It sure is amazing. Every time I see one I can't help but stop what I'm doing and watch them soar through the air. :)

Katy-

I saw my first ones in Yellowstone this summer - they are amazing to see! A guy at the viewing point said he was from Florida and that they "see them there all the time" - he wasn't too impressed...

We saw several while we were there, and I stopped to look in amazement each time - they are special birds!

Really, in Florida they see them all the time? That doesn't sound right.

I seem them a lot up here in Washington and I never tire of seeing them.

I've seen just one and it was georgeous. So glad I got to see it. Don't see how anyone could just take them for granted.

The guy from Florida was probably seeeing Ospreys. They are very plentiful there and are also very majestic looking. There is nothing like a

Bald Eagle, though. I have never seen one in the wild but would love to.

Yup, we see them here in WA State, in fact, the story is that, one flew over our area clutching someone's toy poodle..... JJ

I see them occasionally here in lower Michigan. There are a few nesting pairs within 50 miles of me. In the UP (upper peninsula) they are so common that my kids get tired of me pointing them out.

Most of our eagles migrate and I'm sure many of them end up in Florida. Florida does have its own resident population.

Bald eagles are still officially classified as "threatened", but actually they're found in every state in the US except Hawaii. They're also common all over Canada.

Regarding the toy poodle, that's unfortunate, of course, but that gives you an idea of how ranchers feel when they are forced by law to stand by and watch eagles carrying off their baby lambs, each spring. Nature may be beautiful, but it's also very cruel.

Katy,

I wonder if the eagle you saw was one that was relocated from MD to NH last year? I remember we discussed it at the time. Anyway, congrats on your first sighting!

Love,

Polly

We have tons of them here in Vancouver. It's so funny to see them out my window all the time and then go to the States to see Canada geese!
