FYI, Braintalk celiac/gs group is down indefinitely

Post by Lucy »

Some of you may already know that this entire HUGE site for all sorts of neuro diseases and other diseases, sponsored by Harvard/Mass Gen Hosp's Neuro Dept since 1993, has apparently crashed during this past July -- think about a month ago.

Sure hope they can fix it.

The person who requested a group be added to that neuro board for celiac and gs has her own site now with lots of information from the old site transferred to it. If I remember correctly, that address is glutenfree.com . Sure hope that's correct. If not, I'll try to correct it later.

So why did it crash? Were they hacked? Was it due to a server failure, and they didn't have a backup?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Wayne,

Not sure what happened.
Perhaps I could e-mail Anne of Little Rock who was one of their moderators. I have a hunch that if anyone would know, she would.

Think there's also a contact address on the site I mentioned above -- name's Cara, if I remember correctly.

Have a feeling no one outside of the guy who manages the techie stuff really knows what's going on, or when it will be over.

I first tuned into the then called "Harvard/Mass Gen Neuro Dept Bulletin Board" site in early 1999, looking for Parkinsons information and support.
We'd just gotten this gizmo, so first time with internet capacity here.

At that time, registration wasn't required, and eventually they started getting more and more BIZARRE posts. I couldn't make heads or tails of what they were talking about half the time, but fortunately, I'd developed a private support system by then, so rather than put up with that nonsense, we just kept up the correspondence and support via private e-mail.

At that time, the Harvard site didn't require registration, but at some point prior to when I got the M.C. diagnosis, they obviously must've switched over to an upgraded system with registration required.

I've never actually posted to the Harvard site, even the PD site, so the old M.C. board was my first experience with a board, other than reading the posts, and knowing a couple of people from both PD and Celiac. I actually got to meet Anne at the Dallas event last spring, but only briefly because I was tending to Mom with the wheelchair, food, etc. In other words, I couldn't keep up. Anne was with some of the other frequent posters to Braintalk, but I didn't get a chance to meet them.

I wonder why that site, of all places, attracted so much of this viciousness??? It was so bizarre that it was even difficult at times to tell that it WAS vicious! Haha!

Anyway, I suppose that being such a huge site, may have something to do with it being targeted, if indeed that's what's happened.

All I know is that there sure will be alot of people missing out on some excellent help if that board never comes back up. Sad, isn't it?

I noticed that Luce, the message I read is that the founder is/or was on vacation and unable to bring it back up from where he was hopefully playing with his family. I'm sure he had a laptop along but it surprised me this site crashed. Certain it will be up and running soon.

In case you don't know Luce, or anyone else who follows braintalk there is an interim forum operating now until they get the big guy back up. Here's a link - look in the green message box for access to the forums. I'm glad they are working on bringing it back up.

Yep, read that people from there are meeting at all kinds of sites, so they're still in touch with each other. There's also a Braintalk II with all the same forums.

On one of those I read a post, think it was from Big John himself, saying that he was awaiting a part or something by Sept. 5th, so hopefully, it will be mostly in full swing by then.
