My husband - ambassador to the gluten-sensitive!

Post by CAMary »

Mike has been in San Diego all week on business - he flew to Minneapolis this morning, as they tacked a second trip onto his itinerary. He started chatting w/the lady next to him, who was going to a convention. Being from St. Paul, he mentioned some good restaurants in the downtown area. She said she usually just goes to Whole Foods, and prepares meals in her hotel room, due to dietary restrictions. So he asks, "You don't by any chance need to avoid gluten, do you?" and her eyes opened really wide, and she said that indeed, she has CD!! So he told her the cross-streets of Whole Foods, and how to get there from her hotel. He said I have the same problem, so we are well-acquainted with gluten-free offerings in the Twin Cities! He then informed her of the Bittersweet GF Bakery in Eagan, MN and told her where 2 different PF Chang's are located...she looked confused by that, and he said "You know they have a GF menu, don't you?" Her eyes lit up - she *hadn't* known about it, and had been avoiding Chinese food since her diagnosis! He said she was so excited - she couldn't wait to land and check out what MN has to offer! I'm glad she now has an alternative to eating in her room! I swear, I am hearing about more and more people each day with this issue! I chatted on a message board the other day with a woman whose son and DH have CD. It's affiliated w/a program to help people get the most from their grocery $$ - she was lamenting how hard it is to save big $$ when you have to buy high-priced GF stuff - we exchanged some tips - and several others chimed in - it seems everyone knows someone dealing with this!

Small world, huh? :earth:

Kudos to your DH! GF is becoming more mainstream. I'm so proud of myself, I've avoided gluten pushed in front of me twice in the last week to make it almost two weeks completely gf. I almost wish I reacted as severly as most of you. My reaction can be delayed by 2 or 3 days and if I only indulge once, I just bloat, sometimes the aches don't come.

Ah well. I'm being good. I'm much easier to live with when GF.

 Your husband is a very nice man. I know the woman was so happy for the information he gave her.

God bless your husband and am sure the lady was more than happy to have a GF primer for MN. I work in a very small office - 6 people - and 2 people have friends and relatives with CD. It is becoming much more recognized by the medical profession and for that I am so happy that they are acknowledging and treating the disease.

Love, Maggie
