Skype - Free Phone Service Over The Internet

Post by tex »

Hi All,

As per Liz's request, I've added a feature to this board which will allow us to add a "Skype" button to our profiles. Here's how it works. You have to have a Skype account before you can use the service. You can only use the service if you have a broadband internet connection. A dialup connection is too slow, and will not work.

After you sign up for your own Skype account, all you have to do is add your Skype name in the proper line in your profile, and a Skype button will be displayed at the bottom of your posts, PMs, etc., along with the buttons for all the other instant messaging services.

Using the Skype service is free, as long as you use it only to talk with other computer-based Skype accounts. With a Skype account, you can also use your computer to talk to someone who does not have a computer-based skype account, but in that case the system has to dial their phone number, and you will have to pay fees based on the amount of time used during the call, and you will probably also have to pay a regular monthly service charge, just like a conventional phone service account, (This is just a guess - I'm not sure about this, since I don't have a Skype account).

Here's where you can find out more about Skype, and you can download everything you need, if you want to try it. Notice that until the end of the year, they are offering free calls to landlines and mobile phones, also.

Note that if the people you call are using webcams, you can also make free video calls.

I've also set up the board so that your button will show your status, if you set it up and activate it, (IOW, your Skype button wil show if you are "online" and "in the mood for conversation", or else it will show that you are offline, not available, don't want to be disturbed, or whatever. To set up your button to show your "status", go here:

If you need any help, please don't hesitate to ask. I can't personally sign up for a Skype account, since I don't have broadband service available, but we'll figure out how to answer your questions, and solve your problems.

Tex

P S A Skype button will not appear in your posts, until your Skype name is added in your profile.

Thanks for that Wayne. You did not waste any time getting it up. I have put my Skype name in my profile.

You're welcome Liz,

Thank you for trying it. Now if we can just get enough users to make it useful . . .

Love,
Tex
