Hi!
I hope I find everyone well here! I had my sigmoid (2 weeks ago)and the results were that no MC was found. I haven't actually spoken with my GI, this was a nurse.
My Short history -
In Aug 2005, I was Dx with MC and was put on Colazal. Since then I have had sharp pains (not every month) associated with my mens. cycle which prompted me to see my Gyn- who said it was severe cramping. (no way) My GI was next. By this time I had similiar symptoms from Aug 2005. Because of this, he did a sigmoid 2 weeks ago. (BTY - I opted for no sedation, and it was pretty uncomfortable - but nothing unbearable) I have had one cycle since then and it was pretty uneventful, except for a few strange aches.
Around the time of my sigmoidoscopy, my symptoms were subsiding. I'm guessing that that is the reason my results were negative. I haven't changed my diet at all, so I'm curious what triggered it. Maybe I'm more of a remission patient than not? My GI Dr thought that since I had a problem last August, then was symptom free until the NEXT Aug (2006) that it could be allergy related. I just don't know. Thoughts????
I have not had D with this, only C from time to time. I have also gained 20 lbs since last Aug. I have always been thin, and for me to gain weight like that is unusual. My diet hasn't changed. I'm just looking for a link.
Thanks again for all your help.
Glad to be back!
Shelly

Hi Shelly,
Welcome back, and thanks for the update. Well, that's very interesting, and sounds like good news.
Did your GI doc take biopsies during the sigmoidscopy? If not, how could he determine that there was no evidence of MC? It's only visable under a microscope. Are you still taking Colazal, or was that a short-term treatment?
We've discussed before, the possibility of a seasonal influence, since some of us have noticed flares about this time of the year, but we've never been able to reach a consensus of opinion on whether or not certain allergy effects, (histamines, for example), are actually a factor, or just a coincidence.
Many people with MC gain weight, (while others lose weight). Usually, MC is associated with gluten sensitivity, and that can affect many organs, due to immune system corruption.
I'm running about 20 pounds over my normal weight, since my surgery last November, and can't figure out why. Sometimes our bodies seem to do strange things, when we have immune system issues. Gluten sensitivity presents in some patients as C, rather than D, and with either one, sharp pains are certainly a significant problem for some of us.
I'm hoping that your GI doc did take biopsies, and that a qualified pathologist looked for the markers of MC under a microscope?) Otherwise, he wasted your time with an inappropriate exam, (but of course that's a fairly common practice, thanks to the insurance companies).
Even if he took biopsies, though, with a sigmoidscopy, it's possible that he didn't biopsy the affected area of the colon, due to the relatively short-range effectivness of the sigmoidosccope. The inalammation can occur in scattered, random patches, anywhere in the colon.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Shelly,
Did your symptoms get better after the sigmoid.. or before? Sometimes the cleanout stuff, actually slows things down for a while. Of course for others it makes it worse. Or am I thinking of those awful barium x=rays. At any rate, I know my MC went away...or at least the D did between my sigmoid.. and my next menstrual cycle. But Ibuprofen was my trigger and it returned when I started popping those lovely orange pills!
Anyway, I hope you can figure out what is going on. This board is a wealth of info regardless of your condition, especially when it comes to the digestive tract!
