It has been helpful to read about people's experience with rice. I am going to use Karen's method and eat it at each meal for several days in a row and see what happens.
It would be handy to be able to eat it now and then to make life a little more simple for the cooks on the retreat. As it is, they are going to have to make a number of accomodations for me from the regular vegetarian menu.
Thanks for the postings, Celia

I started my rice experiment yesterday. I cooken a half cup of (raw) brown rice, and ate it with each of my meals.
Possible reactions:
* Woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep for quite awhile. My teeth hurt. so the wake up may have been due to the pain.
* While I was awake, had mild neuropathy in my hand, a minute or less.
* This morning, my lower back feels just a little stiff, but barely noticeble.
* I also had two sharp abdominable pains this morning.
* I feel a slight sensation along the side of my left thigh.
* Runny nose after eating breakfast.
*About 1:30 pm, my second bowel movement was loose stools. But this may be due to taking laxative tea for three days...although lately it doesn't make my stools loose, but maybe taking it for three days in a row is having that effect. I won't have it tonight and I'll see what happens tomorrow.
Most of these reactions are all very mild, barely discernable. I can't be sure the abdominable pain wasn't from the accidental glutening I had on Monday.
So I conitnue the rice experiment today. Celia

I beleive in magic!
Hi Karen, before you started eating the rice were you eating "normal" things? And all you added was rice and you got diarhea? And when you removed the rice you didn't remove any other foods?
Just wanted to make sure that you should absolutely rule out rice.
One other thought, that Wayne brought up was that the rice might contain something besides rice. Some companies like to add stuff to make the rice not stick. :( The rice that seems to work for me is Niko Niko Calrose Rice.

Hi, Im back from Ireland had three weeks and had no major problems did have to take an Imodium in and out just to be sure.
But on the subject of what I eat that starts the problem, since returning on the weekend I ate a little fried dry ribs in a fast food place. and then I ate some rice noodles. Sure enough I was trotting post haste to the wash rooms four times. I think it was overloading my tum or the food. Wont eat that again.
Im till trying various things, now that I have been taking asacol for 4 weeks or more, I think its calming down my bowels. Im trying to be positive here.
Nice to be home again.
