It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Okay, I clicked on it, but I'm not sure just what I'm supposed to see. Commercial egg production has been done that way for roughly 50 years, and Ben and Jerry are just now bothering to learn about it? They didn's seem to worry about it before they became wealthy from the sales of "green" ice cream. If they are so opposed to it, why is it taking them 4 years to phase it out? The answer, of course, is so that they won't lose a single sale, due to any shortages.
Like so many in the "movement", they love to be "green", and "politically correct", because it doesn't cost them anything. Their customers pay all the bills, for the environmental "benefits", but the company reaps most of the benefits in increased sales, profits, and prestige. (Pardon me for being negative, but the environmental angle is the "hook" that they have used to get rich, by playing on their customer's penchant for trying to do their part to help the environment - without it , they would probably never have been able to survive, let alone thrive.)

I agree with you - it's a desirable thing. Of course, the cost of production for free-range chickens is higher, and most consumers, (and businesses), tend to buy the cheapest eggs that meet their needs, thus the reason why 95% of production is from caged layers.
