Taking Betaine HCL for low acid? Recovering from a flareup.

Post by mle_ii »

I'm trying to figure out how I ended up with diarrhea for the last week. I took some HCL supplement because I thought I had low acid. (I did the self test of a drink of baking soda and water test and it came back that I was low). So I took a supplement that the Dr gave me. (though I will admit that it was 6 months past experiation) The day after trying it I got severe diarrhea and have had it for the last week continuously. I usually don't get diarrhea like this any more.

Here's the supplement info:
Betaine HCL 1.3 g
Pepsin 1:3000, 260mg
Other ingred: natural polysaccharide capsule, microcrystalline
cellulose, and silicon dioxide.

It could be coincidence. I'm under severe stress at home right now and who knows perhaps I picked up a bug or got food poisening.

Has anyone else tried an HCL supplement and got severe diarrhea after being near normal.

Oh and I had a first normal stool this morning, so perhaps it could be something that I stoped eating, or a supplement I stopped taking or I got well or I'm handling the stress better. Who knows... I really wish there was a test to tell me one way or another.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I've tried Betaine HCL, (600mg), tablets, and they worked well for me. The source was beet molases, and I took one at the beginning of each meal.

Maybe it's the capsule, (natural polysaccharide capsule). This is from the patent information. Are you intolerant to any of these items?
. . . prepared by uniformly kneading at least one natural polysaccharide selected from the group consisting of carrageenan, alginic acid, salts of alginic acid, derivatives of alginic acid, agar, locust bean gum, guar gum, pectin, amylopectin, xanthane gum, glucomannan, chitin and pullulan in at least one system selected from the group consisting of polyhydric alcohols, sugar alcohols, monosaccharides, disaccharides, trisaccharides and oligosaccharides.
Polly, (and possibly others), have problems with carrageenan, and some of us have problems with the sugar alcohols.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
