Anxiety or Gluten Reaction

Post by kate_ce1995 »

UGH. I have been having anxiety symptoms off and on since last Wednesday. I know gluten can trigger these to some extent, but I also went off medication for them in July. I'm starting to wonder if its just catching up with me as the meds get out of my system. I've got almost D too. Its just really a feeling I hate and I don't know how to separate the two.

Hi Katy,

You have made a couple powerful decisions recently to stop your anxiety medication and try to focus on your diet. That alone can cause anxiety don't you think? Your anxious, worrying about becoming anxious....your stressed at work.... stressed about your diet?

Depression and anxiety sure appear to be a common problem with MC'rs or anyone for the matter that have to deal with chronic health issues. I experienced anxiety for a number of months which seemed to slowly resolve itself as I became more experienced and confident in my recovery choices and my diet.

It certainly seems possible that these feelings could be a result of detoxing your body of the medication and changing your diet. As I eased into Paleo I noticed that I became super sensitive to sugars and caffeine which caused anxiety feelings so I stopped ingesting them. I hope as time passes this will all works itself out easily. Keep the faith!

Love,
Joanna

Anxiety and Depression can be signs of Bacterial Overgrowth as well. The bacteria consume/block some of the amino acid tryptophan, this is converted by your body into important signaling chemicals, that when blocked can cause anxiety and depression and also stress. Heck any malabsorption could cause this as well.

Oh, and I'm having a hard time figuring out which is which. Is it my disease/syptoms/worrying/stress that's causing the Anxiety, or is it the Anxiety/stress that's causing me to feel bad or cause symptoms.

Wish there was a test that could point to what is causing what.

Hi Mike,

As my doctor ( the good one) said...there are over 5 pounds of bacteria in the gut ..so when there is an overgrowth of bad bacteria it can definitely affect how you feel. I think the disease dictates how we react to stress...when I feel well I cope better.

Cristi,

Well, and here's the chicken or the egg part of this all. Stress causes those tight junctions to open, which could be what can break oral tolerance of those bacterial that a normal part of the gut. And thus leads to inflamation and other symptoms.

My guess is that the vicious cycle needs to be broken before we can heal. Some how the balance was upset and it's having a hard time rebalancing the system.

Question, you had some testing done that found the bacterial overgrowth and what bacteria was present. Do you remember what tests/testing was done? Not sure which ones test for specific bacteria.

Thanks,
Mike

Cristi and Mike

Having read about bacterial overgrowth and the stress anxiety connection for years and finding few studies that clarified which bacteria were the culprits and and what antibiotics would work without killing all the good bacteria I gave up. Not really give up but just kept looking For me, limiting carbs, or better said , eating specific carbs has been the answer. Well, at least part of the answer.

That being said their is another side to my story. For the sake of argument lets assume for the moment that it is true that “Stress causes those tight junctions to open, which could be what can break oral tolerance of those bacterial that a normal part of the gut. And thus leads to inflammation and other symptoms.”

As much as I might pursue aerobic exercise for health reasons I also pursue with the same degree of diligence a program of stress management. When I discovered the connection it only made sense. If I could find no way to manipulate the bacteria that opened the junctions caused by stress then why not come from the other direction and deal with the stress. It was a life changing breakthrough

For me stress and anxiety were not because of circumstances but how I was reacting to circumstances. Their are many ways to do this and as much as dealing with MC is figuring it out answers on your own with help from others, so is the stress/ anxiety reaction cycle.

Jon Kabat-Zinn’s books “Full Catastrophe Living” and “Wherever You Go Their Your Are” were and are a great help in that they detail a daily program of mental and physical exercise in how to deal with the stress reaction cycle

Jon Kabat-Zinn’s program may not work for you but their are plenty of others that you can experiment with. Just do a search on the web

P.S. It might be interesting to do a Poll to see how much time members actually devote to taking care of themselves on all the many levels in any day or week.

Hi Mike,

I hate those chicken and egg scenarios! LOL. It really is complicated.
The lab test I got is from DD ( Doctor's Data) and it's called a comprehensive parasitology, stool, x3. It does a bacteriology culture, yeast culture and a parasitology test. I was negative for yeasts and parasites but had overgrowth in citrobacter freundil and proteus mirabilis (the bad ones) but also was high in the good ones....but had none of bifidobacter. I got the test through Dr. Stephen Wangen, ND at the IBS treatment center in Seattle...but I would think your GI could order it as well.

Hi Mathew,

Thanks for the book recommendations. I just started The Power of Now...I think you mentioned it ...at least someone up here did. You sound like a person who has found a wonderful way to be in this world...at peace with yourself. I'm not sure if that's the key to healing...but it sure sounds like a wonderful way to lead one's life.I would love to learn better stress management as well...anxiety just has a nasty way of creeping in. You are an inspiration to keep looking for a calmer way to live.

Kate,

Could it be that you accidentally ingested gluten? Once you've been off of it for a while, like you have, the reaction to it can be much worse.

You recent problems at work are probably not helping any either!

I bet the meds you were taking for anxiety wore off long ago.

This might be something to see a doctor about if it continues.

Love, Jean
