Please Pray For The Children & Families
Morning All,
Well it is not a good one where I live. Only 15 miles from my home is where the tragedy occurred yesterday in Lancaster, PA. No one will ever know why it happened and does that really matter? The facts are that 5 very young Amish girls are now gone from out community and that the other other young girls are tragically injured and we could lose even more of them. I have lived very close to the Amish my entire life and there are not more peaceful and helpful people in any community. This tragedy will affect the community as a whole since they are all related to one another in most cases. Last night 3 buggies went through our senior community and we all know them and waved and cried as they went by. Our hearts and prayers are with them and I ask for your's too.
I am probably the most peaceful and passive individual and hate the fact that guns exist in the world, but if that monster was still alive I would see to it that he never drew another breath. What gives any individual - sane or not (and he was sane to plan this in the depth he did) to takes another's life from them and their family? Questions I will always have and no answers will be given but this has to stop now. Our children are not safe and I personally, would probably never let my children attend any school if I had children. If such a thing could happen here, it could happen anywhere. It seems to be the trend of the season and it sucks as a trend.
Sorry I am so outraged and saddened now but just had to get this in writing to vent some of the anger and sadness. Thank you all for listening and hopefully for your prayers.
Love, Maggie

I agree, Maggie, that it is a most horrible thing to happen, and who would have ever thought it would happen in an Amish commumity. They are most peaceful people. There are some in our area in Pa. also.
I think we need to be looking much deeper than at the fact that guns exist. They aren't the real problem. The problem resides inside the people who use them for evil. We need to be looking at the values being taught (or not taught) to our young people in the last few decades and and the level of respect for others, including their lives.
I'm sorry, I'm getting carried away here. I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say. I'm not claiming that prior times were "peaceful and perfect" but the opposite certainly seems to be increasing.
My prayers are with those who are involved in this terrible situation. I cann't imagine losing a loved that way.
Love, Shirley

I agree......such a sad and senseless tragedy.
I put a lot of the blame on the media. I think that even when youngsters are taught good values, it can sometimes be undone by the media. Especially the constant diet of violence in the media.
Did you see "60 Minutes" last Sun.? There was a chilling story about "bumbashing". Apparently a new craze among some teens is to find a homeless person and viciously beat him up....to the point of killing him in some cases. A teen who was interviewed said it was done for "fun", for "excitement". There are some videos that can be purchased (300,000 so far have been sold) where the point is to find homeless people and give them $5 for beer as an incentive for them to indulge in destructive, violent, and sometimes lifethreatening behaviors. These behaviors are then filmed. Also, the videos show homeless being attacked unmericifully (and laughingly) by thugs. This story sickened me.
Studies show that youngsters exposed to violent video games are more likely to behave violently in real life. And many crimes are "copycat" crimes - done because someone learned about a similar crime in detail in the media. (They are already worried about the copycat effect with the Amish tragedy too). Why do we sensationalize crime and violence in our society? It used to be that dead bodies/blood were respectfully not shown on the evening news. Now it is "anything goes". If we didn't give so much attention (their "15 minutes of fame") to those who commit violent crimes, I think there would be far less incentive for violence.
Stepping off of my soapbox now,
Polly

Maggie,
I didn't realize how close you were to this latest location. When I first saw the headline on the evening news last night I thought they were just yacking about one of the other recent tragedies. Only to find out it was yet another. And this one, really hits hard because of the place and lifestyle of those affected.
My heart goes out to all of you in your community. I lost a good friend to a would be serial killer (he killed 3 girls over a 2-3 year period before being caught) when I was 10 in my small Vermont community. I can't imagine when the number of kids lost is more than 1. One affected us plenty

I was so sad to hear of this tragedy yesterday - and of course, Maggie, our prayers are with your community...
There are several problems here, one of which Polly mentioned, which sickens me beyond belief!! One of my professors in my teaching program (in 1991) said conflict management would be the buzzword in education over the next 20 years as children become increasingly violent, and lacking in skills to deal with problems, therefore acting out in socially inappropriate ways. I didn't see how that could possibly be the case, but now some of *those chldren* have reached adulthood and continue to handle difficulties in life in "inappropriate ways". I wish I knew the answer to this "epidemic of dysfunction"....
Also the way mental illness is handled (mishandled) in the country is a disgrace. There is still very much a stigma attached to seeking help, and even those who show disturbing tendencies, cannot be dealt with until *after* an innocent person/people have already been harmed. It is just a bad, bad situation. Again, no easy answer.
We had a woman here about 10 years ago who suffocated her 3 children with duct tape. I tend to not focus on the tool used, but the problems with the person, and how society could/should have intervened to prevent the tragedy from occuring.
I sent my kids off to school this morning with a heavy heart - and the realization that my kids are familiar with "lockdown procedures" in the event of an armed intruder - something they shouldn't have to worry about...

Polly,
I think you are right on the money. Crimes such as that are crimes against society. They are perpetratred by individuals who want to punish society for what they perceive as society's unjust treatment of themselves. That's why they choose to do it in the most sensational way that they are aware of. It "punishes" all of society, not just the immediate victims.
If the media didn't so willingly cooperate in these individual's childish plans to strike back at society, it would soon fall out of favor, and most of these distraught individuals would eventually go back to just commiting suicide in solitude, the way it was done in the "good old days".

Hi Maggie,
I hate violence of any kind, also. It is especially regugnant when used against a group who lives as a model of non-violence.
I also hate guns, but I think the problem is complex and involves a number of issues, of which gun availability is just one. Some of the other issues have been mentioned by others, so I won't repeat them.
Our whole nation (and world) needs prayers, as we seem to go deeper into this well of violence against each other.
Love,
Alice

I can no longer stand the pervasive violence in the media. Can anyone please tell me WHY, on the 6:00 news tonight, a major news item is a surveillance tape from a store where we actually watch the shopkeeper being killed by a thug? And then it was shown a second time. DISGUSTING. When did surveillance tapes become daily news? Aren't they supposed to be for law enforcement? Can you imagine how the family members of the victim must feel seeing this over and over again? We becoming immune to violence and losing our humanity in the process, I think, if we think this sensationalism is "news".
