Hi Rita,
All sources of sweetening are sulfite heavy except honey and evaporated cane juice. Cane sugar isn't as bad as beet sugar, though. Especially bad is anything with fruit juice - especially bottled lemon and lime juice, also brown rice syrup. Now this is just from what I've been reading, I'm not a doctor. But if it were me, I would cut out the fruit bars, and also the potato chips. (a really high source of sulfite is processed potatoes)
Also, you didn't record liquids except the coffee. Two things about that - artificial sweeteners are really high in sulfites, and are you drinking enough water or other liquid?
I seems like you're getting 3 serving of protein a day. Do blood tests show that you're anemic? Have you ever had your thyroid tested?( esp if you're cold often)
And about the sulfites - I'm just on a kick lately because I'm sensitive to them. It might not apply to you at all, but I thought I'd mention it. So sorry if it seems like I'm promoting that particular agenda - Doctor Marsha just has to consider everything, you know! :doctor:

Hiya Rita!

I cannot tolerate the carageenan in almond milk. I think Karen also has a problem with it. Also, guar gum (in the lemonade bar) can cause diarrhea in normal folks. Maybe it's not the coffee but the additives - anything with artificial colors/flavorings can be a problem for me. Although if the coffee itself is flavored (like hazelnut or Irish creme) I cannot tolerate it.

YUM. I LOVE broccoli rabe!

Hope you start to feel better!

Love,

Polly

Sorry, I'm going to be gone starting Friday morning early, so I may not be able to check in for a couple weeks. But I'll be back, so keep posting!

Hi Rita,

What a good idea it is to list your menu here and the complete ingredient list too - I think the only way to get complete control is to be detail oriented when analyzing the food you eat.

Polly mentioned the carageenan in Almond Milk - she is right, I cannot tolerate it either. In fact, I would probably not have understood why I react poorly to almond milk if it were not for Polly pointing out carageenan to me. It is a product I have found in some deli meats as well - watch out for it.

The vanilla syrup in your coffee could be a big problem
The only coffee I can tolerate is w/o flavor and w/o anything added - just black coffee, preferably decaf. I brew my decaf in a French Press (Bodum, you can buy it at Starbucks) - tastes GREAT!! Have you tried Newmans Own Green Mountain decaf - it is a Fair Trade coffee which is for sale in Publix (regular super market) at a very competitive price.

Vanilla is gluten free if it is "straight". I believe vanilla extract or vanilla flavor can contain gluten. Ask on the general discussion board if you want to know the facts about Vanilla - I am not completely sure of this.

I noticed dextrin in the Nana cookies - dextrin, I believe, can be a corn derivative. I don't know if you are corn intolerant? I am corn intolerant - I have found that I can eat Enjoy Life cookies; they are free of most allergens. I can also tolerate Jennies Coconut Macaroons (but they are not egg free).

Love,
Karen

Hi Rita,

Congrats on the daily Normans  You are doing great!!

I don't remember your intolerances but I don't think corn is among them, right? I am still wondering about the GF whole grain dextrins in your Nana Cookies - perhaps some corn in there, perhaps some soy?????

Try the Enjoy Life Cookies for something that travels well and is free of allergens.

I think Lucy used to eat the Envirokidz rice and peanut butter bars for breakfast. If you are a cereal addict (LOL!!) it might be a good product for you - they are rather full of carbs and sugar though.

I am sure you will find other things to eat for breakfast once you start breaking your old habits. I am having t-bone steak and green beans for breakfast today.

Keep up your good work!

Love and light,
Karen

Hi Karen
Is this what you mean? Enjoy Life;No-Oats Oatmeal Cookies
No-Oats Oatmeal Cookies… Ingredients: Sorghum flour; Pure brown cane sugar; Grape, Apple, Pear juice concentrates; Unsweetened applesauce (water, apples); Expeller-pressed safflower oil; Brown rice flakes; Currants; Natural dextrin; Vanilla; Baking soda; Cinnamon; Xanthan gum; Rosemary extract. What about the cane sugar & dextrin? Nana looks cleaner I the dextrin is GF, no sugar & just fruit juice sweetened.

I'm still having trouble eating anything but chicken. Just turns my stomach & I can't eat chicken for breakfast (turns my stomach). Sure do miss my eggs. I am gluten, soy, dairy & egg intolerant & yeast is borderline. Love & light, Rita

Hi Rita,

Yes, those are the cookies. They are yummie - they are completely allergen free which is the reason I have dared eat them. I am quite fond of them as they are the only cookies I eat. You are right, they have sugar - isn't that the reason to eat cookies? LOL!! You could give them a try, if you wish.

Next time I am at the HF store I will look for Nana's and read the ingredient list carefully once again. I am thinking that the dextrins in Nana's cookies could be harmless (not derived from corn).

I understand why you miss the eggs
Gotta find something else that will make you feel good in the mornings. Have you tried fruit smoothies with coconut milk and almonds ground/blended into it for a little added protein?

I wonder why you can't eat anything but chicken?
Do you still have a lot of gas/bloating/rumbling?

I think the mornings are the worst for most of us. I still get nauseaus sometimes in the morning right before I have a BM - even when the BM is a Norman. I have to admit the last month has been the best ever for me - sometimes I forget that I am "sick"; I almost forget that bread, cheese and all those things are out of the picture; that's scary!! And funny too!!
I know I have to keep eating very conservatively w/o taking risks if I want to continue feeling better. Paleo is my style.

I hope you will continue to feel better every day.

Love,
Karen

Hi Karen

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried smoothies & they don't hold me either. Actually I never have gas or bloating anymore, just don't like the thought of eating "any" meat but chicken is the least offensive. Never even liked meat as a kid & found it very easy to be a vegetarian. Only eat the chicken for the easy protein. Tried steak last noc & managed to get down half. Don't like the taste or texture. Do you have any good marinades? Love & light, Rita

Hi Rita,

I don't marinade anything  Like I said, I am very conservative and eat paleo style which means plain and not using recipes either. Silly, isn't it? But it is easy!

I wonder if you've tried using ground meat? Sometimes I buy a package of ground pork (Smithfield brand is very good) and just brown it in a skillet - as it nears completion I add garlic and some frozen vegetables (or fresh), I put a lid on and let it steam a little, then I add salt and pepper for taste and eat it.

I find pork to be very easy to eat (doesn't have a strong flavor) especially in ground form. You could give it a try.

I used to be almost vegetarian many times in my life - haven't ever cared much about meat; but now I have chosen to work on getting a good attitude and be more open minded to finding meats that I do like and try to accept that my digestive system is geared toward meat, veggies, fruit, and nuts - not grains, dairy, sugar, and starches.

I hope you will be able to find foods that your body accepts - it is not always a good idea to let our habits rule. Maggie Redwing is a vegan and multiply intolerant - perhaps she can help you find some vegetarian foods that your system likes.

Love,
Karen

Wow! You have had a bad week. I don't believe there's any way you can keep that kind of stress from affecting you.

Just for the record, the Enjoy Life cookies cause problems for me. I'm not sure if it's the sorgham flour, (sorghham grain is somwhat similar to corn, as far as analysis is concerned), or something else, but I gave up trying to make them work for me.

I hope next week is a lot better.

Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
