Feeling ill

Post by kate_ce1995 »

Okay, I think I've mentioned before that I've been having some of these "anxiety" feelings again lately. Really since about mid-September. I went off the antidepressant I was on back in July.

Well, I just had another "attack" sitting here at work. I wasn't doing anything stressful, was concentrating on a report I'm reviewing for a collegue and all of a sudden, my chest felt tight, I had to poop (no D, just urgent) and I felt a bit fuzzy headed.

I always calm myself by checking my pulse (not racing...was about 78 bpm), and I also ate an apple thinking it was noon and maybe I was hungry. I did indulge on sugar this weekend (apple walnut fudge and penny candy) so I wonder if it was a blood sugar crash, because it only lasted about 10 minutes. I'm eating my lunch of left over ham, peas and corn right now to make sure I've got some protien in my system.

Now granted on Thursday as I was driving home from work I started feeling sort of this way, but it was gas...burps and farts. Kept up for the rest of the evening and then my tummy felt a bit off on Friday. The rest of the weekend wasn't too bad. I blamed that episode on the flavored potato chips I ate. But it was like because of the bloating, I couldn't breath right.

My biggest fear when these happen is that something is wrong with my heart. I've never had a serious heart check, but then no doc has ever seemed to have concerns after listening to it. I don't want to have to go back on the antidepressant because I don't think I need it. And I think my mood and well being is directly related to gluten. But I wonder why these things keep happening. And why they've been worse since I got much more strict about being gf again (in early September). I suspect last week I ingested gluten. But today, I don't know what that was related to unless it was a hypoglycemic episode.

Well, I;m rambling with no direction and should get done with lunch and get back to work.

UGH.

Hi Katy,

Those symptoms sound familiar to me. I had a general low level of anxiety and feeling a lack of well being...and i felt it wasn't depression either. My heart would feel weird as well....not racing but a very heavy heartbeat. Everything felt off...dizzy as well. My naturopath kept saying there was something wrong with my thyroid. My TSH was low...but not considered Hyperthyroid. After much convincing my dr did a thyroid uptake test and it showed I was indeed hyperthyroid. Dr. should listen to a person's symptoms and not blindly at just lab results. I've been on medication for over a month now and (knock on wood) and the heart stuff and anxiety are gone. Weren't you the one who also had a hysterectomy this past year? My naturopath told me that when your ovaries are taken that the thyroid can go nutty trying to keep the whole endocrine system balanced. Also, us MCers are prone to thyroid issues. The adrenal glands also can cause problems after a hysterectomy. Just wanted to share my experience with you...don't know if that is what is going on with you or not. I hope you feel better soon. Those symptoms can feel pretty awful. Take care.

Love,
Cristi

Hi Cristi,

Yes, I'm the one who had a hyst last year too (Nov. 8 will be my 1-yr anniversary). My GP did do thyroid tests to check to make sure it didn't get screwed up in the process of the hyst and the 6 months of Lupron prior to that. They were "normal" but I should double check and see if I was low-normal. What is weird to me is that the antidepressant suppressed this stuff. So would an antidepressant supress it if it was a "real" condition like the thyroid, or is that a sign that it is just anxiety. And if it is, how come it took until Septmember after weaning off the drugs in July for these things to come back? Questions, but no answers. I'm thinking about calling for a followup with my GP.

Hi Katy,

I was on clonazapan for months after my surgery (Nov 17) and that did help my symptoms as well. I weaned off it in Aug and really had problems then. I started the thyroid meds in Sept and am having complete relief from the anxiety now. My adrenals were off as well and am taking DHEA to help that. I am taking a low dose and started that around March. Problems with either can cause anxiety...as well as life in general. The heart thing was the most troubling thing for me.

Hmmmmmmmm,

November was a "surgical" month for the members of this board - my surgery was also in November, on the 13th, (for other reasons, of course). Let's try to avoid that sort of thing this year, if we can. LOL.

Hi Katy,

That's no fun. It could be hypoglycemia......did you feel cold and clammy and did your knees get weak? The chest/heart rate symptoms could have been anxiety which resulted from feeling "funny" from the hypoglycemia. Have you tried to keep a diary of when they occur....what are you doing at the time, when and what did you last eat, etc.?
One good thing about eating paleo is that you get in the habit of always eating some protein along with the carbs. It is amazing how those sugar swings totally disappear on the paleo diet.

I would guess that since this didn't occur right after you stopped the antidepressant that it is probably not anxiety. Unless........the anxiety has develped anew, which is certainly possible with all of the stress at work - not to mention raising 2 kids and planning a wedding. Whew! My heartrate goes up just thinking about it. LOL!

Hopefully these attacks will just go away.

Love,

Polly

Well, so far I feel better today.

I did some reading on stomach ailments and am going to reduce my caffine input (I usually have a Dunkin Donuts large coffee...today I got a medium, which is all (or more) than I drink on weekends) and I'm going to go back to Tylenol. Since ibuprofen was my trigger for MC, and I've been using it again because Geoff prefers it and quite frankly so do I, I wonder if it is contributing to this increase in gas. I think that is related because when I get feeling this way, I do feel better if I burp. And I was doing a lot of that yesterday.

As for cold and clamy? I don't remember. It was either than or hot flashes, LOL.
