Vitamin A

Post by cludwig »

Hi Friends,

I've been e-mailing my Dr who moved to Fla about my DHEA labs and he's looking into that , but what I wanted to share was that he said he came across a French study where they used isotretinoin ( a synthetic analog of vitamin A) to treat microscopic colitis with good success. He said that while isotretinoin is a toxic drug, he thought adding vitamin A was a good idea...it's known as a great gut healer. He recommended a brand called Micelle-A brand. He is going to send me a copy of the report and I'll pass it on.

Love,
Cristi

Hi Cristi,

That's interesting. I'll bet a GF cookie, that this pertains to the article he is referring to. I couldn't find the full article, only a very brief citation:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/quer ... t=Citation

I wonder if your doctor might have misinterpreted the point of that paper. Apparently the paper points out a case where a man was being treated for acne with isotretinoin, and developed CC, as a result. That paper apparently was published in April of 2006. Unfortunately, there was a paper published in July, that offers an even more condemning viewpoint about isotretinoin and IBDs:
Am J Gastroenterol. 2006 Jul ;101:1569-73 [Pubmed] [Scholar] [Select] [Drop] [Hide] [Show]

Possible association between isotretinoin and inflammatory bowel disease.

Deepa Reddy, Corey A Siegel, Bruce E Sands, Sunanda Kane

OBJECTIVES: The Physician's Desk Reference lists inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as a possible adverse event associated with the use of isotretinoin, a popular acne prescription medication. Our aim was to perform a systematic examination of reports of IBD associated with isotretinoin use. METHODS: All reports filed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) via the MedWatch system were requested and reviewed. Strength of causality was determined using the Naranjo adverse drug reaction (ADR) probability scale. RESULTS: All of the adverse reports filed with the FDA between 1997 and 2002 were accessed and reviewed. Eighty-five cases of IBD associated with isotretinoin use were reported. According to the Naranjo ADR probability scale, 4 cases (5%) scored in the "highly probable" range for isotretinoin as the cause of IBD, 58 cases (68%) were "probable," 23 cases (27%) were "possible," and no cases were "doubtful." CONCLUSIONS: In a subgroup of patients, isotretinoin might serve as a trigger for IBD.

It would appear that isotretinoin is probably another entry in the rather long list of things that can cause MC. In light of that, I would be very reluctant to try it as a treatment for MC.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Tex,

Well that doesn't look too impressive does it, if that's the study he was referring to. If it's something different I'll let you know. Maybe these two things aren't connected but I recall you posting something about abdominal surgery, vitamin A, and eye problems. I have had minor problems with my vision and dry eyes since the surgery. I wonder if there is a connection.

Love,
Cristi
