Skin cancer

Post by Lucy »

Hi all,

Still taking care of my mother with my sister, so haven't been able to play on the webtv in a long time. I think the overall trend is still down although she has had lots of good days since leaving the hospital the last time. I don't think she's in any pain, however, so that is a blessing.

I suddenly remembered yesterday that I had this lesion on my upper right thigh that I'd been meaning to get checked out, but kept forgetting. It is the lowest level of skin cancer, I'm almost certain, but it made me think to ask the group how many of you had already had some form of skin cancer.

I'm thinking that most of us who've had them are in the later decades of life, particularly those of us with fair skin and recessive eye color.
I'm hoping that the dermatologist won't worry about cosmetics, and that s/he'll just cut widely enough around the borders that there'll be no chance of not getting it all. The site would barely show if I were to wear a swim suit, but then, at my age, I'm not all that concerned about things like that anymore.

OK, how many of you MC'rs have had any skin cancers? Please list the exact type/s you've had, and if possible, the age you were as far as you remember at their appearance.

I've always heard that these are autoimmune, but how that can be said is something I don't yet understand. I think they are really very common, particularly among people who look like me.

Yours, Luce

Hi Lucy....I have had 18 lesions of the same type you have removed from both my hands and two from my face around the mouth. I spent alot of years in the sun and alot of years smokings as well. I first remember them appearing at the age of 41 yrs old.
My Fayjer also had Skin cancer. But his was a higher level, would have to ask My sister what level (she took care of parents) I was a smoker, So was Dad, and So was Mom (Mom was a social smoker tho)
Maybe AutoIMunne, cancer Genes and Smoking played a part. Love Oma
May I be more compassionate and loving than yeterday*and be able to spot the idiots in advance

Hi Lucy---

I have had 2 surgeries for melanoma---one on my ankle and one on my knee--
The one on my ankle looked like a teeny freckle---never changed color--never changed shape---smooth and just there---the one on my knee was more *of a funny color and shape---raised a bit also--
As far as all came back the surgeon went deep enuf to get an *OK*

BUT--my derma. has me take a chest Xray every year to make sure that a *cell* hasnt spread!!!

We go every 4 months to be checked---and yes---when I was a teenager we all went to Coney Island---basked in the sun---and now we suffer the consequences--

Have U any idea what *name* has been given to these lesions??
Is it BASIL CELL???
Would be interested to know---
Hope all works out--

I haven't had any (yet) but I have 3 friends who have had something called Mohs surgery for skin cancer on their faces in the last couple of months. They are all blonde (well, blond with gray  ), two are 62 and one is older. None of them has any colitis-type issues.

It's good to hear from you, Lucy. Glad Mom is doing okay.

Hi...I had melanoma surgery on my face 2 years ago...I was 52, but had the spot for several years before it was diagnosed. I also had pre-cancer non-melanoma cells removed from the scar area on my face. I am also fair, and spent my summers in a pool, salt water or in a boat....oh ya and on the slopes...hahaha. I used sunscreen some of the time, but usually thought I would get a better tan if I skipped it...not smart! I am checked every 6 mos now, but after the surgery, I went-in every 3 mos.
