It's no secret that I am more than a bit Depressed, Too much to explain here. But I am wondering what to Ask the doctor for to help this. I fell Like My life is in the bottom of a fish tank, I cry for no reason and at the drop of a hat. I am terribly unhappy and can't pin point it. Not to mention the incredible pain from the RA and Osteo (That the doc will help with I am sure) but I am most concerned about the helpless and worthless feeling I have.
Any seggestions on how to approach the doctor with this? I don't want to sound dumb. Love Oma

My 2 cents worth

Post by Carol Arnett »

Hi Oma, There is nothing wrong with telling the doctor just what you wrote in your message. If you have a printer, just print and take it with you. I felt the same way a couple of years ago after 2 or 3 surgerys and long recoveries and my doc put me on Lexapro. It helped tremendously. Any antidepressant takes at least a couple of weeks to really start working but just knowing you are GETTING help is worth a lot. There is no longer any stigma attached to being depressed so get to the doc and get going girl. I wish you all the best. Love, Carol

Oma, Carol has given you some good advice. I do hope you will get some help with that depression soon. You are NOT worthless. Far from it. I admire you so much.

Oma, I also wanted to add what Shirley said, you are NOT WORTHLESS and you are NOT HELPLESS. Again, as Shirley said, I have always admired your gumption...for lack of a better word. Maybe you are just in the wrong job. You always seemed to love it when you were working with animals and ALWAYS had something interesting or amusing to say. I have noticed a change in you but it is nothing that can`t be fixed. Just hang in there and get to a doctor. Love, Carol

Oma----know just where U are coming from---
Appears things are running amuck in my life too--like being caught in this spider;s WEB and cant get out--

See your doctor----say it like it is----no cover ups--
I dont even know where I want to be!!!

The other half and I are walking 2 different roads???
We always have----bareing my soul---
My friends have seen this---and without going into detail---as U have said--they are very angry with Louis--
He is his mother---controlling and its their way or the highway---and Lynn is a carbon copy---
The sad thing is--he has some very fine qualities --UNTIL!!!!

So there---I have said it also OMA---
It happens--
And this isnt my first time trapped in this WEB~~~~
Keep hold of yourself---
U are worth every inch of space----U are special--

Anything U can speak to your doctor about is NEVER DUMB----I found that out from my chats with Dr. Lois~~~
The issues U might think are a *nothing* are a something!!!

Luving U for who U are--

Hi Oma, here I am again with a small excerpt from the dictionary about depression.

Anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status, can suffer from depression. It is estimated that 19 million American adults suffer from depression every year. Depression is not a WEAKNESS or a character flaw—it is a real medical illness. But the good news is that with proper treatment, 4 out of 5 patients will improve. This has to do with Seratonin levels in the brain. Don`t despair....it probably isn`t you and Mike or even your job, as I mentioned before.....just some out of whack Seratonin levels in your brain. My doctor explained it to me but I can`t properly relate it to you. You might be very surprised at how many things that SEEM to be going wrong in your life are really not. Love, Carol

Hi Oma,

Carol made a very important observation in her post, "You might be very surprised at how many things that SEEM to be going wrong in your life are really not." Depression has a way of warping your thought processes to make almost everything appear in a negative light. That's one of the tricks that it uses to dominate your thoughts, in order to keep you in a "depressed" mood.

I agree with the advice you have been given here - if depression continues to bother you, despite your best efforts to avoid it, just tell your doctor what you have told us. Be aware that there is no single med that works for everyone. You and your doctor may have to experiment with different meds, and/or dosages to find a treatment that works best for you. Everyone is different in their responses to anti-depressants.

Love,
Tex

Hey Oma,

What they said! Also you are very important to us, well, I don't need to speak for others, you are very important to me. I wish I were there now to bring over some chicken soup or cookies and have a nice chat about crocheting or something!

Oma,

I really cannot add anything to what has been said but can tell you that depression can make you think so little of yourself when in fact your are the most important person to yourself. Hard times come and go in marriages but if depression is there at the same time it can really make it hard to deal with.

As has been said, you were so happy dealing with animals and I hope you can find that and happiness reall soon.

Love, Maggie

Hi Oma,

I went to a doctor, and started out the conversation by saying, "My husband brought me here. If you want to talk to him he's sitting in the waiting room. He says I'm depressed. I probably am, I cry at puppy commercials on tv." at this point I start crying.

She gave me a talk about how it's not a drug, it's replacing what your body normally produces but probably isn't doing enough of right now. Quote "its like taking insulin for a diabetic". Or vitamins to suppliment what you're not getting in your diet.

So I would recommend bring a friend, even if they sit in the waiting room, someone who the doctor could talk to if they wanted to verify. If nothing else, it's a sign to the doctor that you're serious about how you're feeling.

I hope you don't feel bad about wanting something to help how you're feeling. Wellbutrin helps my moods, but the main benefit I get from it is pain relief, and it give me more energy. On the advice of my doctor I take Wellbutrin and Zoloft (small amounts) because he says they often work better together than either does by itself. And he was right, because although I took Zoloft, it wasn't nearly as effective until I started the other with it.

Lots of Love, Oma . . . Marsha

Hi Oma
I too have an idea of what you are going through. Stress & depression can do horrible things to your health. Your doctor will be able to assist you. There is a light at the end of the tunnel if you seek help from the right people. My doctor has been a terrific support to me when I felt at the end of my tether. I know how it is - can't stop crying & that awful feeling in the pit of your stomache. One of our daughters is experiencing the same sort of thing as well. She is on anti-depressants which seem to be helping to a degree. Is there any family close to you who you can talk to about this. It really helps to know that you have that kind of support close at hand.

Love

Liz
