So, my D is getting worse, not better. Do you think that the deli meat I was eating yesterday could be contributing to this? I asked the guy behind the counter if there was anything injected, and he said there wasn't. I'm really afraid to eat anything. Maybe I should try some peeled boiled potatoes and plain fish. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm getting a little worried - and the fatigue is very, very tough.

Hi Beth,

Without a label it's tough to guess what was in a deli product, but most deli products contain dextrose, (among other things), which can be made from wheat, but in the U. S., at least, is usually made from corn. Deli meats almost always have some type of preservatives, or flavor enhancers, and some contain dairy derivatives, (though there are certainly "safe" exceptions, of course).

In all honesty, I can't recall anyone in this group who was able to achieve remission by diet alone, who did so by eating processed foods, or someone else's cooking. We all did our own cooking, at least while we were trying to initially stop the reactions, to allow our gut to heal. I'm not saying that it can't be done, but I think that you would have to be luckier than most of us to do it, since there are pitfalls everywhere. When I say processed foods, I'm including the "safe" processed foods that supposedly do not contain any of our intolerances. While you are reacting, your gut will be sensitive to many, many things that it will not be sensitive to, once it is healed. Most of those "safe" processed foods will work for you, after you heal, but not necessarily before your gut heals.

In my case, I ate virtually nothing but meat and potatoes, with an occasional serving of broccoli or green beans, and sometimes a little rice, for roughly two years or so, while I was healing. I couldn't handle most other veggies, fruit, and especially nuts. For a long time, the only oil that didn't cause any problems, was olive oil. I had to cut out all sugar, except for maple sugar, but that may have been due to a severe enzyme deficiency, caused by damage to the villi of my small intestine.

Yes, peeled boiled potatoes and fish should be safe. Boiled eggs are a good protein snack. Lamb is considered to be one of the least allergenic meats available, but I personally find it very unappealing. If you are still hungry, I personally think that it's better to eat more of the few foods that you know are safe, than to try to add variety. You will cut your risks of re-activating the flare way down by reducing the variety down to a boring minimum.

P S In case Polly doesn't check in for a while, I'm pretty sure that the diet she was referring to is the GF diet.

Hi Beth,

I've been thinking about your situation. Maybe you should just eat one food that you're sure is safe for you (it used to be millet, for me) for 2 or 3 days. When your D stops and everything calms down, then you can introduce another food to go with the first, and see what happens. That's the process I more or less followed. For me I'd go on a millet only diet, then I found out that pears canned in their own juices were ok, then canned green beans. Baked fish was also ok. It got a little complicated after that, but at least I knew 3 or 4 foods that I could fall back on.

Hi Marsha,

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. That's a good idea. I'm doing a little better today because I figured out that it was the deli meat that was making me sick. Still a little cramping and a little D, but SO much better than yesterday. Except for the fact that I still took two two-hour naps. Hmmm. Definitely can't keep doing that. Tonight I had steak and avacado for dinner. Still hungry after my nap, so will try some more boiled potatoes without the skins. If I don't start feeling significantly better in a couple of days, then I'm going to go on the hunt for that one food that I can eat to stay alive, and then I'll go from there.

I really appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. I was beginning to think there weren't any answers!
