Paleo Progress Report - 2 Week In

Post by MaggieRedwings »

Afternoon All,

Just wanted to give an update on my efforts to go Paleo. I have not dropped bread from the diet but I am making it myself since Frank bought me a breadmaker and it is gluten free and I am loving it over the brick bread they sell to us.

I have introduced raw greens, fruits and veggies to my diet and not in great quantities but a little more each day.

Breakfast has not been as tricky as I thought since you have all given me great ideas there. Sweet Potatoes and fruit or today I tried an orange for the first time in years and had a piece of bread with it. Trying for some vitamins since I seem to have a wicked cold.

I have found that beets, artichokes, some nuts, tuna, raw shredded carrots and a couple slices of apple on some raw romaine makes a good lunch salad. If I am still hungry, which I usually am not, I am having a can of fruit packed in fruit juice to fill it out. Crackers have gone away.

Dinner is some cooked veggies, fish of some type and my faithful potatoes. Of course a glass of wine goes along with it.

I find I am not as tired as I was and hope that I get more energy in the long haul. I still have the explosive D in the a.m. and sometimes after the salad but am sticking with it for now.

One question I have is how many of you do Quinoa since I am thinking of adding it along with dinner instead of potatoes or in my salads.

With everyone's encouragement, I am really taking this on and I thank you all.

Love, Maggie

Hi Maggie,

I'm so glad to hear you got the breadmaker. The diet has been so much easier ever since I got mine about 4 years ago. There are many good
recipes and mixes available, as you know. The smell of fresh baked bread, even gf, is wonderful! That's all we eat now. Even Bruce. Good luck with the paleo diet. Are you getting enough calories?

Love,
Alice

Hi Maggie,

Thanks for the progress report. Sounds like you're making good progress with the changes to your diet.

Regarding the Quinoa, to be honest, I'm not sure if anyone has done much more than experiment with it. I tried some as a hot breakfast cereal, 2 or 3 years ago, but that was while I couldn't tolerate any sugar, and I was also afraid to eat any fruit or nuts at the time, so it was pretty bland. It didn't cause any reaction, though. Hopefully, someone else has been more creative with it.

Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I've had quinoa pasta in the past. It was okay, but I prefered the corn or good rice pasta. And pasta isn't terribly paleo. But if it's a food that sits well once in a while, its always an option.

Hi Maggie,

Glad your feeling better, but quite frankly I have no idea how to advise a vegetarian on taking on a paleo diet. I eat alot of meat and fish.

Maggie,

Okay, thought about this. Alice wondered if your getting enough calories in your diet and so do I.

Have you discovered the joys of coconut yet?

Speaking of paleo and vegetarian. I was looking at some studies yesterday on figuring out how to rebuild GI tissue, villi, epithilium, etc and it appears that protein is very important for rebuilding this tissue.

The amino acids L-Arginine, L-Glutamine, and L-Cysteine being most important for promoting Epithelial Growth Factor or Epidermal Growth Factor. Luckily all 3 of these can be found in vegetarian food sources.

What was also interesting is that saliva contains both of these growth factors. Though just swallowing your own saliva won't work, it must be part of a protein food source. So do as mom said and chew your food up good. :)

Well, well, well, and lookie here. My favorite "Vitamin" Vitamin D shows up yet again.

Modulation of growth factor/cytokine synthesis and signaling by 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3): implications in cell growth and differentiation.

Indeed Calcium also plays a role.

I got an hour of sunlight today and it felt great. It's so dark here in the winter it's hard to catch the light that we need for vitamin D but maybe our summers of non stop daylight make up for it.

Thanks Mike,

Joanna
