Hi,
I just started the Paleo diet, but I noticed that many of you are yeast-free and the Paleo diet is not yeast free. I just bought some dates and was looking forward to eating them but then I realized they are not yeast-free.
Any suggestions on incorporating the yeast-free diet into the Paleo diet?

Actually, while some of us do avoid all yeast, (and a few have tested positive to yeast intolerance), I don't believe that the percentage of yeast-free members is very high. Some of us avoid yeast just to be on the safe side, even though we aren't sure that it causes problems for us. Unlike most other other food intolerances, yeast intolerance is usually temporary, and often it can be reintroduced, once the gut has healed.
Candida yeast is usually the culprit in yeast overgrowth problems, and I think it's usually a good idea to avoid it until the gut is fully healed, primarily because it's a major contributor to the leaky gut syndrome, and the gut is not likely to heal, as long as leaky gut is present.
Yeast shouldn't be a problem in most cooked foods, since yeast can be destroyed by heating a food to a minumum of 136°F for 15 minutes. I'm not familiar with the yeast content of foods in general, so I don't know how dates stand in that regard, but I note that Polly, who is an avid paleo-dieter, loves an occasional majool date or two.

I tested positive for yeast intolerance with Enterolab. I never eat any kind of baked goods that have yeast in them (bakers/brewers yeast) or any other product that has bakers/brewers yeast added to it. I believe the Enterolab test refers to that particular type yeast only - not for example Candida.
I eat Medjool dates and Neglet (SP?) dates on a daily basis - I don't think this is a problem. Dates grow on trees and I regard them as a fruit - this may not be correct but in my thoughts they are simply dried fruit. I also eat many other kinds of dried fruit. Be careful to read the ingredient list to make sure the dried fruit doesn't contain anything else such as for example added sugar (if you don't want added sugar) or citric acid etc. If you like prunes they come w/o additives from Newton's Own label - Sunsweet also has a Premium canned prune that is additive free and you can get prune juice w/o additives at the BILO grocery store chain (store brand).
I hope this anecdotal news will help you make some choices to your Paleo Diet. I personally enjoy Medjool Dates and think they are the closest I come to eating candy......... YUM!
